Building a bike for my brother

Recently my oldest brother has been joining my father and me for our weekend rides. My brother doesn't ride, in fact he tends to avoid it all costs, when the riding bug took a hold of me and anybody near me, he was spared. This all stems from a horrible crash he had when he was in high school. At the time he had a Shogun Selecta and he rode everywhere. This one time he forgot to latch the front wheel and took off down the street, unfortunately a mild bump in the road dislodged the wheel, and my brother flew like superman head first into the pavement. Luckily there wasn't much permanent damage, just a lot of scarring, no lost teeth or fractured jaw. Hundreds of stitches later and multiple trips to the doctor, his fate was sealed. That was one of the last times he was ever on a bike.

Fast forward 25 years and I've finally gotten him back out on a bike. We first took him on a slow 20 mile ride on our awesome trail system, very flat and very scenic. He wasn't the happiest camper afterwards due to the butt pain. But he did have a great time during, so much so that he rode the next weekend with us again. This time a shorter trip out to breakfast and back, the whole time he was singing and shouting as he was cruising down the hills. This whole time he had been riding my Trek 930 that was built up as a multi use all arounder. I use it to pull the kids with the trailer or tagalong. I kept thinking, if he had a bike of his own I think we may be able to save him!

So last weekend i'm at the coop lusting over my Carlton that i plan on taking home in a few days! but that'a another thread, anyway, i found a semi intact Norco Bigfoot from the early 90's. just needs handlebar, shifters, tires and new cables. I worked it out with my dad that I would put all the parts it needs on it if he got the tires and a new seat. It's coming together nicely and i'm hoping he likes it. I plan on setting it up similar to my trek 930. No pics until its done, I'll let you know what he thinks of it and a ride report !

Good on you.
Just don't let him overdo it right off the bat.

Glad to hear another convert! Are you using axle nuts this time or lawyer locks?

It is great to hear that you got your brother back into biking after so long. I recently built up a bike for one of my brothers and today was his first day commuting to work. He is still getting used to riding drop bars but he is enjoying it a lot. Good jov.

I'd say they already did that with the initial 20-miler. Six years ago, when I'd just started up again, that would have made me pretty sore.

I gave my brother one of my Peugeots a while back and he rode it some, but gave it back. He keeps saying he's going to come back and borrow another one of my many bikes; I wish he would.

I gave my brother the option to take any bike I had in the shed(the good ones are in the house) and he picked my Dad's old 7speed Schwinn Klunker equipped with chrome fenders and balloon tires. Some people never learn. I was happy to send it to Maui and clear up some more room. My wife on the other hand took it upon herself to sell her heavy cruiser and now has a full campy colnago, an allez epic and a cannondale r600 single speed. She has learned
