Paris Sport restoration completed!
I got this 63cm Paris Sport (built by Dave Moulton in '79) from my uncle. It sat rotting in his garage for about 15 years before he gave it to me a few years ago. The paint scheme was horrid (to me), and since there was rust and bad touch ups all over the frame, I decided to have it powder coated by Groody Bros. I bought all the repro decals first and sent them with the frame.
The bike started out like this:
I tried to keep the original look when I discovered how much rust and paint damage there was, so I stopped and sent it to Groody Bros. They media blasted it:
Then finished it in Mercedes light blue metallic, with a wet clear coat:
I then started the re-build:
And finished it last night! Took it out for it's first ride this morning and snapped these garage door shots:
She rides smooth and controlled, with great handling! Had some problems with the Cinelli 1R stem (NOS) and 66 bars rotating forward, and the Campy SR brakes squealing terribly (new Cool Stop black pads). Have to work those out before I ride again!
Overall, a great frame with a killer new refinish that should last another 20 years!

Wow! A beautiful transformation with that new paint job and a classy classic build!!
One of the best Paris Sport I have ever seen yet!
As for the Cinlli 1R stem and the slipping bar, I'm wondering if the stem requires the bigger diameter bar (26.4 mm diameter) from Cinelli. The slipping bar is usually the symptom of having a wrong bar size. People had also experienced the stem actually end up cracking at the front end of the clamping portion of the stem if the wrong bar is used and the wedge clamp overtightened......
A 1A bar would be a better fit to the bike IMO, and have less issues than the 1R You might also consider going that direction with the stem.

Thanks! I chose the color based on the 79 Benz my uncle had in the same color.
The bars are vintage '70's - 26.4. I think it slips because the alloy nut is stripped preventing me from tightening it all the way.

Really nice finish. Those Groodys really understand about not burying the frame details under an avalanche of powder, don't they? Looks as good as a top-notch paint job.

This is powder coating? I am impressed and I have never been much of a fan of powder coat. After seeing this lovely old Paris Sport, I might need to rethink the idea.
Well done! You did a great job, tasteful and elegant in presentation, allowing us to see the bicycle, rather than having detail dominate the first viewing, although I might want to rethink the under-saddle bag, but that is just me.

I asked the guys at Groody about that freakish sized black frame! They have a facebook page that explains how it was in the shop to reinforce it by adding tubes (or something like that). I think they said it was a 68cm!

Thanks! Yeah, the red bag goes with my other bikes better. I only use one bag and move it to the bike I'm riding. Much easier than transferring tools, tubes, etc. every time! I'll have to get a neutral black one that works.

Good call! I have a vintage 1A Stem ready to go - the 1R is pretty, but impractical. Kills me to have to un-wrap one side of the bars, remove the tape, remove the brake lever - I'm used to swapping modern threadless stems at will!

Really nice. Great powdercoating.
I do like those 1R stems, but I may be in the minority there.

Sorry no, mine haven't been a problem (except once after being on the back of the car for a long trip), but I may be a lucky one. I just think they're attractive with the hidden bolt.

The powder coaters did a beautiful job with the finish. Great job conceiving this, and executing it. It's a lovely bicycle.

What a beautiful restoration! If you haven't yet, you should enter it in the Dave Moulton registry and let him know about it.
