My New Trekking Setup

It took awhile to get this right, but i'm happy with the outcome. The bike is a Waterford RS-11. Great bike for long distance riding.

Sweet! Nice job matching all the leather and twine bits. I've seen those bars on several touring rigs, they make a lot of sense. I like having all of your shifting, braking, and belling at your fingertips, along with plenty of hand positions.

Credit card tourer/long day trips?

That is looking swell!

I'm also interested in your build.

Are those the Nitto butterfly bars?

I purchased the bars from velo-orange. I actually cut a few inches off of the lower ends, so my knees wouldnt hit when I was out of the saddle. For shifters I used, dura ace barend shifters mounted on paul thumbies. The bartape is fizik honey brown, they dont sell it in the states, but I found a place oversees. I had to adjust my stem size also to make everything work. It is almost all dialed in. After another few rides, it should be perfect.

Very pretty. What's the purpose of the leather strap between the top tube and seat tube?

Makes it more comfortable to carry on your shoulder?

That is a portage strap, to carry the bike over a rough patch or up a stairway.

I like the bike, too. I have a set of trekking bars, but I still haven't figured out which bike to put them on. I have tried them a couple different ways, but haven't been happy with the end result.

Is "trekking" a separate cycling discipline that touring in some way, or is it just the euro-centric name?

Its really just what those bars are called. Trekking or Butterfly.

They are really diverse bars, so not some separate type of riding, just a different position for riding. They are great for around town, commuting, day rides, etc. You cant get in as aero a position as drop bars, but it seems most riders aren't in the drops very often or for very long.

The strap does indeed help when carring the bike, but it also protects the frame when I am locking it up or leaning it aganst something. I got it from Walnut Studio, a great small leather goods maker.

I like the look of it. Very nicely, and tastefully done.
