Back in the early 80's when I was in college, my younger brother and I almost got our heads ripped off by an older (mid to late 70's?) rider when we mistakenly referred to his Bador as an ALAN.....BIG MISTAKE!!
He was so mad that he was literally shaking mad as he yelled at us "This is a Bador, not an ALAN! This is the lightest bike anyone can buy!" the manager at the LBS had to calm him down, otherwise I could see the guy was almost ready to grab his tire pump off the bike and give us young whippersnappers a good thrashing for being so clueless.....
Having gone through that weird experience, I had learned to be more patient with the less informed....

Where the hell do you all ride your bikes? In all my years of riding I have never encountered such rude behavior. Maybe I just live right.

Why is it always old guys? Do young guys get punched in the neck when they say
something stupid, thus learning a hard but valuable life lesson? Maybe old guys don't think anyone is going to pop them...

He starts rattling with his pedigree of racing accomplishments circa 1975. As he walks around the bike he tells me about his Paramount. Ok, decent bike but quite an argument saying it has my '77 Super "beat". He then nitpicks at every little thing he could think of. I remain silent. Nary a word. I told him not servicing the 38yr old BB would do the same.

After getting treated like I'm a complete dufus/noob I asked him "do you ride??". Nope, had a bad wipeout and wrecked his hip. Right. Of course. Fully expected that. He is about 65 and looks like riding wouldnt hurt him a bit. So he then shows me a fresh scar on his hand saying it was from a stick that impaled his hand....during....a....MTB ride.

Why does this bike incite such criticism? I dont get it. Are some people...strangers...this weird that they feel better doing such even when revealing their ignorance??
Dude put his hands on your bike?

Dude says "I got this beat?"

Dude proceeds to insult you?

There's a point to where you can very politely let people know you don't want their ****. At the second the person puts his hands on your stuff, it's done. "please let go of my ****."

Or maybe, "let's go make out."

I am an old guy and I was wondering what valuable life lesson you are talking about. Violence is good? Old people are rude? Please elaborate.

Pro athletes are no exception. Back in 2006 Aaron Gwin was at Mt Snow watching the race and overheard my buddy and I speculating amongst ourselves, apparently he knew more than I did so he piped up "You seem like you know alot?", "No, *******, I'm just having an educated guess with my friend here, the funny part is I don't recall you ever being part of it. I suggest you walk down to the parking lot, find your car and leave unless you'd like an escort?".
You're saying that Aaron Gwin (whoever he is) is the ******* in that story?

I'm no spring chicken myself, but I would never assume the following things solely based on differences between someones age and mine: (1) I could fondle someone else's bike (or anything else) without permission first, (2) my wrenching knowledge is better than theirs, especially based on my previous racing exploits, and (3) my pronunciation of Italian bicycle names wouldn't send a wave of giggling throughout the gathered crowd.

If its someone that's just lonely or striking up a conversation because they love to chat about bikes that's one thing, but if they are showing off and butting in like that... well I take the opposite approach and start talking about how I love the cheap bikes and time and time again how my trips are within a mph with a lower end bike or how my duathlons where within 10 seconds or some such thing so I got rid of my nicer Paramount since it was all show and brought me good money and I preferred the lowly LeTour anyhow... that should shut em up.

I met him and his extended Paramount family at the last show I went to.

Next time, when they finish talking; simply say, "not my bike, it's his" and point to some random person. Sit back and watch the comedy skit.

Reminds me of this scene from one of my favorite flicks.
