I was born in 1974 and the oldest bike ive owned is my 1990 Trek 7000 Mtn Bike (hey it was the late 80's and my brother had a couple road bikes. i would borrow.) And i got that in 1990 when my Diamond Back Ascent got stolen. But the oldest Bike i own is a 1986 Trek 560. I like the bikes of the late 80's Road and Mtn. i have started to collect the bikes from that era, mostly the ones i lusted after in that time frame like a 1987 Centurion Ironman Expert, 1989 Ironman Expert (would like to get a 1988 ..complete the collection you know.. ) The Trek 560 and a 1989 Diamond Back Apex (would like to find a 1987 Diamondback Arrival).

I have just recently picked up a bike that is from the 70's which is the oldest. from the local CO-OP i got a 1977 Trek TX900, unfortunately someoneconverted it to a Single speed so the frame has been repainted and only original things are the SeatPost, maybe the front wheel and the cranks.

SO i think most of my collecting has stemmed like others from the Bikes i wanted when i was young but didnt have.

No, the oldest bike in my collection is a 1965 Tigra. I turned 21 that year!

I bought my first 10 speed in Japan in 1964. It was a Bridgestone randonneur model with Huret derailleurs, Weinmann brakes and a Wright saddle. It was Legnano green.

Ad for the 1967 version of my bike.

I tend to prefer components from the late 70's though the 1980's because they generally work better than most of those produced during the bike boom.

Most of my favorite riding bikes are from the 1980's

I may be getting older but I refuse to grow up!

All my road bikes date from before I was an adult. I acquired the '72 Condor as a used frame in 1980 when I was 19. The pre-owned market was my path to the quality I couldn't afford new, and I was forever wrenching and acquiring components to outfit it to suit my varied cycling ambitions. After a 20 year lull, the pattern repeats itself when some very affordable bikes showed up at my workplace. With slightly more disposable income and the vast online marketplace for parts I've been able to assemble some very enjoyable rides. With a lot less time to ride than my younger years, I find my cycling ambitions are a bit more contrived. Then it was one multi-purpose bike with a lot of miles, now it is a few purpose built bikes sharing rather limited miles, but its all good.

I'm older than dirt, so no.

Edit: Apparently I'm also senile as I replied twice to this thread.

My oldest bike was made in 1963. I was only ten at the time.

1955 Phillips is older than me, the 1971 Raleigh Twenty and the others are "younger". This includes 1983 Miyata Ninety mixte, a 1985 Nishiki Riviera mixte, 1987 Miyata One Ten mixte, and my newly acquired 2015 Surly Straggler.

As far as vintage I seem to like mid-'80's to early '90's. They're "new" enough that there isn't too much trouble finding replacement parts or simply fitting modern componentry. I also like the wild color schemes, especially the "fades".

No, and yes at the same time. I bought my Fuji S-10S new when I was 18. Actually, it is a Sept '74-built ('75 model year) and I turned 18 in '76, so it was built when I was 16. This particular bike had a long scratch on the toptube, so nobody wanted it. I got it for 15% off in Oct '76.

I was born in 1961, meaning I turned 18 in 1979. The Rudge is barely younger than I am. The bikes made before I turned 18 were acquired long after I turned 18. I guess I got them because they were inexpensive and I was familiar enough with them to work on them. I got the Viscount for my wife, but she didn't like it. The International and Lemond are still frames and not bikes yet.
Excellent.

The Viscount was a bike I owned in the 70's and the International was a bicycle I wanted to own. I have been reading your interesting responses on the forum for a while and was wondering what you think of the Raleigh International. Of course they are just frames now, but you probably have repaired a few and perhaps ridden one?

@Duo, if I ever test rode an International, I've forgotten. Like other Raleighs of the era, the workmanship was inconsistent and mediocre. But it is said to be a great platform for many kinds of builds. It was equipped like a racing bike but had a sport-touring geometry with room for accessories and wide tires. Eventually, I will build it up and report on it.

I'd like to find a vintage lightweight from the year of my birth ('64). If I could know for sure it was from July of that year, all the better. Not a huge priority right now, but you know. Coolness factor

Some lovely bikes in this thread - please keep 'em coming!

thanks. This was a bike I admired as a youngin, but never could afford. Kinda like the Schwinn Paramount, a mark of excellence in our era, and refreshing to know that the bike still is produced right here.

Would you say the Nishiki International was as good a bicycle, I always got a kick over their ads in Bicycling magazine with the Rolls Royce. And of course should have never sold it.
