Univega - A little Help Please

In search of wisdom...

I'm trying to identify a frame. It has nice lug work, complete with the typical diamond cut outs of an upper end Univega. One problem. The lugs are chromed. To my knowledge, Univega never had any chrome work on their frames. What say you? (Also notice that the downshift boss is a single aero or that special Suntour self adjusting shifter boss)

i've only seen suntour symmetric shifters mounted there on bikes i've had with 1983 frames.

never seen chrome like that on a univega. italvega, yes, but the dt boss should rule out italvega.

good looking find.

I'm doing some surfing....perhaps a circa 1983 lotus supreme? Aero mount still a bit odd and is missing the half chrome chain stay. The lug work however Looks spot on.

I ran across this frame too and was curious.

Looks identical to a univega gran rally i owned.
The gran premio had a chrome fork crown. Not sure on the lugs though.
That shifter braze on might be shimano not suntour.

The chrome looks like chrome spray paint. Which would make sense since they repainted the frame.

For the price the seller is asking i was very tempted. Looks like a solid frame either way.

I think you are right on the gran rally. Never thought about chrome paint....everything else pointed to Univega. The "chome" was the red herring.

Looks like Suntour Symmetric shifters could be mounted there. Nice looking frame.

Just looked at a Univega Gran Rally with that that style of DT boss. (Had a Shimano 600AX installed) But the seat stay caps are wrong as well compared to the bike I saw.

I see eyelets... Maybe a Sportour? I've seen a number of those on these forums with Suntour Symmetric.

Yes, the 83 Sportours had the Suntour shifters on top. Mine is a nice ride.

Thanks for all the input...this what I love about this site. Lots of folk bringing many perspectives, and experience, and sharing. Will be look this one over. Price is good, just not sure that the frame will will add value to what I've already riding.

My '84 Univega Viva Sport (M-serial prefix) had the top-mount braze-on shifter stud for the SunTour Symmetric shifter on it - but I replaced it with SunTour barcons. My latest '83/84 Uni Gran Tourismo (L-serial prefix) is outfitted like '84 spec with a clamp-on DT shifter (with a braze-on 'stop' to prevent the clamp from sliding)

Sometimes you can identify the frame's manufacturer by the serial number and this can narrow down the possible brand names of the bicycle.

+1
Looks like the 80-82 Lotus lugs with the 83 fork- so maybe built between the full switch between the years. (Supreme).
