Bike accidents on NPR

Scheduled for tomorrow on Morning Edition.
Only blurb I heard was that middle-aged cyclists are more at risk.

ashes, ashes we all fall down... yep, new medical report shows over-45 males as the biggest increase in accidents, mentioned J Kerry and Bono as examples...
coming in for more urethra and head injuries. Ouch.

I just skimmed it so I'm sure I got it half backwards. I'm in a hurry to get my ride in before the stats get worse.
Cheers, Eric

How is that possible?

Middle aged people (specifically middle aged white men) know EVERYTHING!

So, does having a wreck at 44 protect me from having one when I turn 45, do I skew their scale, or do I have to stop riding before my next birthday?

So the solution is more education for those on bicycles? Really? What about the car drivers in their WMD's? The problem isn't with those who bike, they also drive so their perspective changes when they start riding bikes. The problem is with poor car operators who have no regard for the law or peoples lives.

I do both regularly and I don't disagree with the poor behavior of bicyclists but I would not put 100% blame on bicyclists.

I didn't' get this from breaking the law. I got it from a motorist who did.

More riders, more accidents. It's a pretty startling finding.

This just in: world population doubles, we're going to need more food.

Depends how severe the accident is. If you out for a year you don't have to worry. Otherwise, it is a crap shoot. Most of the time the crap is in the car.

Unless I'm missing something, the statistics they quote normalize the numbers incorrectly. Instead of injury rate per 100,000 adults, it should be per 100,000 cyclists (or other suitable proxy). They readily admit:

A well-documented increase in adult bike riding, for sport, fun and commuting, likely explains many of the findings, Breyer said.
Could it be that the largest (relative) ridership growth has come in the "guys over 45" category?

Regardless of stats, whats the purpose? Justification of insurer's to jack rates for that segment? Sort of like being a smoker, BMI, yada yada.

The purpose of what? The possibly misleading figure on the increase in injuries to our MAMIL cohort? I'm sure insurance companies will do most anything to make a buck, but I trust their actuaries are actually pretty good at statistics.

Is there a moderator in the house? Note the quote bug in post #12 . I've "corrected" it a couple times, but it keeps sticking a extra pair of quote closer and opener after the letter "A"...

There's no reason to think cycling is getting more dangerous on a per mile or per trip basis, John Pucher, a professor emeritus of urban planning at Rutgers University-New Brunswick, N.J., said.
Except that drivers are much more likely to be looking at a phone instead of the road ahead.

I started riding regularly again at 48 and have had four notable crashes in the last five years, so my anecdotal evidence fits the curve perfectly. Fortunately, no real injuries, just impressive looking road rash. On two of those crashes, my head hit the dirt pretty hard and I was happy to be wearing the magic foam hat.

Before then, I think I fell off my bike exactly once, in forty years (off and on) of riding.

I don't know if it's the case with your quote, but I find that sometimes fonts, color codes, and other formatting anomalies are sometimes hidden in copied text, which then leads to what you see in your split quotes. I've found that clicking "Edit-->Go Advanced" reveals some of these hidden formatting codes which can then be deleted there.

How funny that this is coming from a company that produces mainly drive-time radio, and indeed has albums of "driveway moments" which are stories good enough to sit through to the end before you turn off your car and go inside; and yet it's being beamed out to an audience that probably feels guilty for not riding bikes.

I just meant to let folks know that NPR is having a story on it, I believe regarding the Gulf Coast area, and it's on tomorrow's Morning Edition.
I wonder if I took down the OP, would this whole thing disappear? The discussion seems to be taking off, though. Maybe not C&V.
I just posted it when the narrator advised something about middle-aged men, as many of C&V are, but would deny.
It won't be an in-depth story, none of them are, but it may be good listening.

Since it repeats every half hour, maybe every hour,
I'm sure I'll listen from 5-5:30 and go on with the day.
