Looking for one bike and finding three, : )
My mother in law has a place on Vashon Island near Seattle and I decided to find a bike to build up and leave out there. I wanted something along the lines of a touring bike since I'd like to do some loaded touring in WA and OR.
First bike I found was a 1984 Trek 610. I bought the frame from a bike forum member. The bike had some cosmetic issues but the French blue is pretty easy to touch up. And I knew I could build the bike up from my parts bin:
But then I made the mistake of keeping my eye out on the local craigslist. The second bike I found was a 1992 Trek 950. It has a nice long wheelbase and would also make a heck of a road/offroad touring bike. There are a few scratches on the right seat stay but the bike otherwise looks like it walked out of the bike shop:
Of course I didn't stop looking at CL, . And then this 2009 fuji touring bike showed up at a very reasonable price. The bike is immaculate with very low miles:
So the moral of this story is . . . .
LOL, OK so there is no moral but I did end up with 3 cool bikes. The Trek 610 is a keeper. It will make a great bike to take to the Dairyland Dare next year and multi day events. The Trek 950 is a keeper. It will make a great gravel ride and Iowa has lots of gravel roads. And the Fuji is going to get boxed up and shipped to Seattle once I fix it up.

Lots of older Treks showing up on this forum -- great news.

I'm thinking that a vintage trek sports touring bike would be a lot of fun to take to organized rides in the midwest. I used to work in a shop that sold a lot of these Treks in New Orleans in the 80s and 90s and I have always liked them a lot.

The 610 will be a great choice for the DD. The triple will serve you well. The nicer steel Treks from that era are great century bikes. Hope to see it in person next time around.

I thought I'd do a small update on this thread. I fixed up the Trek 950 and took it out on its maiden voyage yesterday. I'm really impressed with how well the bike rides. I've seldom seen an old bike which has clearly been knocked around a bit with a paint job in this good a shape.

C&V happiness is
1-Watching Poguemahone give a Terry 700/520 steel bike away to a person who definitely needed it.
--Then, watching him make a celeste Bianchi possible for someone who likely couldn't afford it, otherwise.
2-Meeting C&V people I would only "know" otherwise by forum UserID. Including the OP.
3-Going to a bike swap, and watching a guy trailer in his stash, behind his Ironman.

C&V Happiness: Going to the Richmond swap meet even though I didn't need anything, getting a good deal on a triple crank set I didn't need for a bike I don't ride, finding I needed another tool to remove the old crank set so going to the LBS for the tool, and now I find I also need to shop for a new BB to mount the triple that I didn't need in the first place.

...and speaking of Richmond (i.e. Richmond, VA), happiness is going into Conte's Bikes over in Short Pump (northwest suburbs) with a C&V '85 Fuji while shopping around for accessories. A nice conversation begins and one thing leads to another, and you wheel in the '85 Fuji for the main store manager to see (who does a double-take, a jaw drop, and calls over the bike mechanic to look also).
Manager
"OMG... Would you look at that? We were part Fuji dealers back in the 80's too and sold a ton of these... This looks incredible. Where did you get this?"
Me
(retold the whole story of buying it off that college grad on Craigslist, etc..etc...)
Bike Mechanic (closely looking over my '85 Fuji)
Yup, I remember these... Suntour freewheels, Sugino cranks, etc... This looks to be in amazing shape for its age! Very nice!
So... C&V happiness is when you find a bike shop that is very C&V saavy and very friendly.

C&V happiness is looking for a frame to build up because your parts bin is overflowing.

C&V happiness is:
1) Getting my sons, now aged 26 and 31, interested in classic road bikes. The elder one rides my 1980 Peugeot PKN-10, and the younger one has a slightly newer Centurion Ironman.
2) Refurbishing used bicycles for the Community Resource Center's annual Christmas Baskets program for needy families. (PM me or respond to this thread if you would like to participate and will be near north coastal San Diego County on 18 October or in early December.)
3) Riding the Bianchi 25 mi this morning, out and back to the top of Torrey Pines hill. Although I probably do this ride a couple of dozen times per year, it never gets old and always brings a smile to my face.

C&V happiness is: Having people store nice vintage bikes at your home.
Hey, I think bikemig is on to something here! Buy a bike and stash it at someone else's home. Genious!
Wait a minute. Maybe I could help out. If anybody needs a place in the PNW to keep their.. oh I don't know... Colnago maybe, or De Rosa, just let me know. I will even periodically ride them, you know, to keep the bearings lubricated and such.

or the 2nd best = C&V Happiness = selling bikes to friends and then visiting those friends regularly to ride their keepers.

...seeing a Rivendell "all rounder" bike that cost $3-4k to build, and knowing that you have 3-4 bikes that are purpose built for different types of riding for the same price.

These bikes are making me pretty happy! OP, may I ask what kind of triple crankset is on the Trek 610? I'm in the process of converting this one back to 2/3 x 8 from 1x8 now that my commute has some more hills. Any idea of the BB size on the 610? Thanks!
