Worthy of a drop bar conversion?
Whatcha' think, is this worthy of a drop bar conversion? I'm in it CHEAP and I do mean CHEAP! I have the bars, an RSX triple crankset, both RSX derailleurs and if I swap the wheelset for one that will take an 8 speed cassette I have a set of 3 X 8 brifters. I'd have to do something about the paint though, the factory paint is BLEH.

While a not real high end I think it would make a nice drop conversion. It is a fairly decent frame with great geolmetry and lowered a bit that stem would look great with drop bars and the paint is actually pretty good. While most wouldn't see it I think this one would look and ride great as a dropbar and the RSX 7/8 speed and lx stuff is just about perfect for this build.

So it has True Temper 4130 main tubes? I like the color. After a polish it might look even better. Touch up the paint scrapes on the fork and you're good to go.
I'd ride it stock for a while just to see if you enjoy the ride. Or if you're itching to do the conversion, swap the bars and the levers first and get the fit how you like it. Ride it around for a while to see if you want to devote more parts and labor to it.

I wouldn't take the time to do a drop bar conversion. There's nothing wrong with the bike and it would make a very functional utility bike. I'd wait for a better bike to do a drop bar conversion. They're out there and they're inexpensive.
I just picked up this 1992 Trek 950 for $125. The paint job is in great shape and the bike makes a really fine rider. I'm thinking about doing a drop bar conversion on this as well:

The thing about a conversion, if you do the work yourself, all the parts are transferrable to your next project. And you already have the parts, so no cost there. You are really just talking some cables, housings, and bar tape.
If/when something better comes along, you can just swap all of your stuff. I have done this countless times.
A bigger question is if you just don't like the bike aesthetically. In that case, I would clean it up, sell it and look for something different. I would not spend the money and time painting this bike.

The bar, stem, and BB on my 1987 Specialized stumpjumper comp that I did a drop bar conversion on a few years back will not go over to the 1992 Trek 950 I just picked up.

Not as inexpensive as this one and I'm only considering this because I already have everything and wanted to give one a try. I may not even like it when I'm done. Besides I have that beautiful saddle I can sell to finance the build. 
I don't mind painting bikes, I won't say I'm good at it but I don't mind it. In fact it's kind of fun, when they turn out good that is. My biggest problem is deciding on the color. This will be a rattle can job, I have 2 cans of 2001 GM Torreador Red Metallic I bought to touch up my old Impala that might look pretty good on it......
My parts bin runneth over.

The Probe is now getting rebuilt for my Daughter-In-Law. Yes, it will fit her, she's a fairly tall young lady.

Is the GT the same size as the Probe (hurts my behind typing that)? It looks smaller, but the triple triangles always size differently.

The GT frame finally came and I did a comparison to the Probe, the distance from the center of the BB to the center of the top tube and the length of the top tube is nearly identical. Should work very nicely. However, it's going on the back burner for awhile, I have some other commitments I need to clean up before the snow flies. It will be ready by Spring though.
