The bike:

The bad: gearing needs to change. A lower low was needed for the day two climb. I just couldn't hack it after the end of day one.
Sunscreen: a necessity. Not having/using it contributed to that crappy, badly sunburned feeling, along with the feverish feeling on night one, which persisted into the morning of day two.

Kila school parking lot morning of day one:

Where the pavement ended and the gravel began:

The climb was beautiful, spectacular scenery, and great people to ride with.

More to come tommorow. Just got home less than an hour ago. Made it to Bozeman on Sunday after the ride, and finished up today.

I thought that the dirt parts were a lot rougher than last year while the gravel wasn't as bad. The big hill on Sun punished me but I had a great time. It was nice to meet some members from here.

Pinkness.

Lunch was in a different spot this year - private property with an awesome waterfall backdrop.

Unregistered guests in the campground on Sat night.

My ride.

On Monday I drove out to Glacier as I hadn't been there before. I saw a couple of Cino riders on Going to the Sun road. I also found a local to pose for a pic.

It’s my first full day back from Montana. I made it through a full day of work, I’ve unpacked and my bike will stand beautifully dirty in the TV room until the Cino buzz wears off and I am forced to wash it and I will think of the fun times I had at Cino this year.
It was my 5th year for riding this
All are unique but familiar. Some new faces and new aspects set against the same basic route largely populated by the same core group of riders.
This year, I loaned my nephew Greg, my Bruce Gordon so he could join me on the ride. He and his friend, a forumite y’all would know as @whatwolf (Sophia) drove to Montana while I carpooled with Bob Freeman.

Forming early on Saturday Morning in the small town of Kila, Greg and Sophia get ready for the mass start after the ride organizer, Reed gives his customary Cino sermon.

We take off en masse (by Kila standards anyways)
Lining up for the start by Matthew Pendergast, on Flickr

The pace is easy as we head out of town and up into the hills. Gravel soon replaces pavement as we begin the ling climb up the mountain. Walt (on the left) and Chris (on the right) pass me on their fixed gears very suitably matched. Both are strong riders. Wes, works up at Big Mountain Ski Resort is accustomed to riding away from everyone while smoking a cigarette but Chris is no slouch either. He had just finished the Raid Pyriannee a few weeks ago, riding it solo. They glided by me effortlessly.
Walt and Chris by Matthew Pendergast, on Flickr

We were told before the start that we were in for a surprise when we reach our lunch stop. Instead of dining in a meadow beside the forest service road, we were told to ride down a gated road that split off the route. It was more of a jeep trail actually. About a 1/2 mile or so later we could hear the river tumbling over in a waterfall. The trees opened up in this spot at the foot of the falls there was our Pranza (lunch) spread out underneath a canopy. New this year, it was a catered gourmet spread of meats, cheeses, bread, fruit, beer and wine.

There were plenty of places to sit down and eat. Bob and Byron chose the gazebo

I wandered around after eating and admired some of the bikes

Eventually, riders were cleared to leave for Hot Springs. The racers left first to compete for the Eddy Merckx award (1st into town).
I chose to have another glass of wine :-)
Riders began to trickle out. Chris and Byron take off with me.

Eventually we make it to Hot Springs where we will stay the night. On the outskirts of town there is a truck parked along side the road with a volunteer handing us cold cans of beer to drink as we ride into town. Our ride ends at the Alamedas Resort. We sit and wait for everyone to arrive. A cold keg of beer provides refreshment for Greg and I..
My nephew Greg by Matthew Pendergast, on Flickr

There are a few casualties from the days ride. Nick crashes out and probably breaks a collarbone
Aftermath by Matthew Pendergast, on Flickr

I count my lucky stars

That night we dress up and have a communal gourmet dinner on the lawn. The wine flows, announcements are made and folks drift off to do their own thing.
I watched the movie “American Flyers” projected on the wall of the resort for a while then mosey over to the Symes for a soak springs before turning in for the night.

I wake early the next morning, soak in the springs again, have breakfast, then head over to Alamedas with Bob Freeman for the start of day 2. @mountaindave herds all of us C&V Forumites for a group photo

I pack the camera away and speed off to catch up with everyone but have a flat soon afterwards in nearly the same d@mn spot I’ve done so for the past three years. So I end up being late for lunch. which is really no problem. I eat a bit then begin the climb up the ‘infamous’ 9mile hill with Greg and Dave.

Dave 2 by Matthew Pendergast, on Flickr

They pull away from me and I settle into a groove. I have others to keep me company

Beer awaits at the top of the pass. I visit with Dave, Greg and others as more arrive.

Sophia arrives with a big smile on her face.
Properly hydrated we get ready to finish the weekend ride with a descent down to Kila

Where we all converge at the Kila Pub for drinks and food.
We go our separate ways after eating. Another fine weekend in the books. See y’all next year!

Wow, that looks incredible. The scenery, the bikes, the lunch spread below the waterfall, the camaraderie! It's so out of the way, but I suppose that's part of the draw as well. Another one for the bucket list.

Cino is great!

My First Cino. Great event. The other similar events could learn a bit from this. Food was incredible. I love the attitude, the camaraderie, the small size, everything about it. I've got pics on flickr here: https://www.flickr.com/photos/837910...57658649927075. Should have taken more bike pics. Here is the bike I rode, an early 60s Wilier-Triestina https://www.flickr.com/photos/837910...57658419969855 Just finished putting it together last Wednesday. Thanks to Northbend Matt for getting me going on this.

So, there were at least two Wilier-Triestina bikes there this year; did you see any others?

Looking at that other one @northbend photographed, I sorta cringe when I think of the fragile chromovelato finish getting sandblasted by gravel and rock chips on all those fast descents. Oh, well; bikes are for riding, I guess!

Nice pics, Matt, I almost feel like I was there.

Well, it looks to have been another great Cino experience again this year. Thanks to all who've given us pics and stories. My backup computer is not letting me see most of the pics, but that won't be an issue forever. I'll end up getting to see them all soon enough

Matt: who is Nick and how's he doing now? From the looks of the front wheel, that was a hard fall

I heard on either Sat night or Sun morning that he didn't break anything...I can't recall who said that, maybe Jan. Really nice pics Matt.
