My new to me 1984 Trek 520.

Someone posted this on the ebay/craigslist thread, and everything fell into place. I had a mini bike for a while, and it sold in a day. I hit buy it now, but couldn't get out to that side of town until today. The condition is not spotless, but it's not horrible by any means. I am slowly going to build it back into it's former self. I've already removed the nasty bar tape and hoods, and gave it a quick bath.It cleaned up fairly well. I am also in the middle of removing all the black plastic accessory mounts from the 80's and 90's. This is as found.,,,,BD

I will post build pics along the way. Hopefully the weather improves the next few days. It's been light rain all afternoon. This was around 2 PM today, it's been like that most of the day.

The stem is massive for a road style. Anyone know what brand it is? I've seen the logo before, but never heard mention of the name?,,,,BD

Could they be made by the same manufacture of the handle bar ? Bellarii or something ?

I have the same bike, same size. I love it to pieces. It's a good, stiff, stout thing that has carried me far and wide, loaded to the gills, with my substantial heft upon it.

It has very few original bits on it now, just headset, seatpost, bars and FD. I plan to be buried with it.

What a nice 1984, champagne colored tourer. Lots of unused eyelets/mounts, if you decide to run fenders + rack. The color is one which gives you many options for being creative with other colors on the bike - both shiny silver with black and also many brown shades work. Looks like it will shine up nicely and be near perfect from the 10' view. (and the right frame size to make a tourer really work well on the road)

Not a Trek, but my (formerly) 1984 champagne tourer had double eyelets front and rear, as well as the stay bridge + fork drilled for f&r fender stability. My fork blades also had front rack mounts. Centurion ProTour

24 inch seat tube. I am kind of surprised it doesn't have double eyelets front and rear, but anyway. Overall I am pumped to finally own a Trek cantilevered touring bike. I have been looking for one off and on for years. They were always too high in price for me, or the wrong size.

The fenders will probably be the Gazelle polished stainless ones I bought years ago. They have been on several bikes so far. Hopefully they will fit in the forks with a 27 x 1 1/4" tire.

Oh and last night a 1983 Trek 500 dropped in my lap. Same frame size. Silver with a dark blue seat tube band. I don't need it, but I want it. I have had a thing for pre 1990 Treks ever since I found my 510. I haven't bought it yet, but in the next few weeks. It wasn't openly for sale. Someone I barely posted a pic on facebook, and I asked. Hopefully they won't ask too much, since it's not really a higher end model. It's just a nice looking bike in decent condition. I might over improve it, or I may leave it stock. I haven't decided yet.,,,,BD

I too have been bitten by the early Trek bug. I'd love to get my hands on a 520 and one of the (racing) 700 models.

I think my next one to look for, is a 614 I believe? One of the members here has one, and the color is incredible. A rusty pearl Imron color. Stunning!,,,,BD

Like this one? Kind of a rust meets copper color. Not sure how they got the Viscount cranks on it. Maybe they were re-machined to accept a taper?

Yes, that color is called Chestnut, I believe, and it's a 1981 613. I can't remember his handle on here, but he has a lot of nice bikes.

Edit: Found it, cobrabyte is his username

Well, it's a touring bike. That's the same stem I have on my '85 Peugeot Vagabond, so maybe it was an early 80's touring bike thing. I've always wondered what brand it was, too.

Nice 520 - I'd love to find one (and have the room for it).
Here's my 614, bought in June and not really ridden yet:

My main hope, is that the hubs and BB are okay. Judging by the wrap it has a LOT of miles on it. The wrap was weird stuff too though, so that may be the reason for the discoloration. It looked like it was made of white rubber. It was very stretchy and not much padding to it.,,,,BD

This awesome stem, I'm afraid is too long. I have a technomic that will get me both a little more elevation, and is about a 1/2 inch shorter as well. Just a shorter stem would work though. It doesn't have to be taller.

Not a lot of the vintage Treks do. Even the 620s and 720s.

I can recall seeing one pic of a 720 with double eyelets. I'm sure there were more, but I just haven't seen them- and I look.

By the way- great score, congratulations! I'm sure you'll really enjoy this bike.

Not a lot of room for wide tires and fenders on these bikes, though.

Thanks! I am amazed one finally came my way. I had the HUGE 86 model a while back, but it had 600 side pull brakes. The cantilever brake model is the one I've always wanted.,,,,BD
