Team Z Lemond Maillot Jaune

Still not sure how I managed to grab this one. I first saw it on the local CL when I was out of town for a few days with no price and a poor description. Contacted the seller when I got back and to my surprise it was still available. The kid I bought it from had it handed down from a family friend who was an avid cyclist before health issues arose, and I walked away with it for a song. The bike is actually my size at 60cm, but I still am not sure if I want to keep on trucking on my Torelli or graduate to this (albiet more flashy) ride.

If anyone can help me peg down a year that would be awesome. Full columbus TSX, full campy (Chorus Ergos, Athena BB, racing Triple F/RD Cranks), not sure on the calipers or headset. Also, how does one ID campy hubs? As far as I can tell, mine have no markings whatsoever other than the QRs. Also curious about the components, as I have seen a range on these bikes, were these typically sold as framesets then built up by shops/owners like other contract italians. Overall the bike/components are in great shape minus some dust. The one faceslap feature was the aero seatpost which was bottomed out, and packed with allen keys to keep it there(!) causing a few scratches on the post, but nothing structural. The bike is currently strpped down for a full overhaul, after which I will ride it around for a bit before deciding on whether or not to sell. I'll post a few more pics once she has her face on

Super clean top tube routing

2001 was the last of the quill stems and I didn't see anything like that in the 2000 catalog and in any event with all the Campy-stuff, must be before the association with Trek or, before '95 so: sometime between '87 and '94?

Quanda bella.
Gratulations on the beautiful score! But saddened to hear a brother had to put the bicycle away.

I recently bought and built up a similar 94 frame like yours, but in white and with my favorite group--7800. It's a pretty, pretty bike and I love riding it.

Many safe and happy miles to you and the new Beauty!

(Don't judge me. I have a prrooooblem. )

Nice bike. I'm a lover of the Lemond geometry which generally favored a longish TT and slack seat tube angle.

Original parts? = hard to tell. I'll 2nd the supposition that it was a frameset, built up by a person or shop. Triple chainring on a TSX race bike would seem to be an owner driven choice. Triple front without a long cage rear is less than logical but not unheard of. Elegant Campy seatpost and short stubby black stem are inconsistent. Bet it had several mods over the years to suit the owner(s) needs.

Wow, you got a TSX frame. Most of the lugged steel LeMonds I see on eBay are Cromor.

I got a 60cm Guerciotti TSX on Craigslist a little over a year ago. Surprisingly light bike for a big frame.

Had one of these we bought for my ex. Top tube was too long for her, but what a beautiful bike. Should have kept the bike in the breakup, she never appreciated it. I remember the bike vividly now looking over your pics. Her's came with DA, bits though I don't remember whether it was 7 or 8 speed, or whether it was STIs or downtube shifters now that I think of it. Nor what the rims were. I remember thinking how cool it would be to do a GIANT size shadow box in the living room with all Team Z kit (bibs, gloves, etc.) and a giant size enlarged Sports Illustrated Lemond cover:

Excellent bike, excellent score. Racing T, always something to look at.
I assume that RD can handle the wrap, though; it looks like the builder knew what would work.

Not sure what size those bars are, but if they're Cinelli bars, I have a stem to work, about that size, in excellent shape.

Wow, that's pretty!

But you haven't yet drunk the C&V concoction yet. You need to keep trucking on the Torelli and this one!

Looking at the OP's list of bikes under his photo, It appears he likes the @RobbieTunes Kool Aid flavor.

Not me. I find that in my usual size, the long top tube just doesn't fit me spot on. On a Lemond, you usually have to go down a size to make the fit work.

Interesting comment. A worthwhile read is his first book 'Greg LeMond's Complete Book of Cycling'. Though of course its geared a racer's mind.

OP's bike looks smashing! I'm slowly building one for the girls and in team Z livery. Not following any exact year but rather going for some LeMond pieces. Scott drop-ins, Avocet, Mavic, etc.

I got a Tourmalet frameset (the Reynolds 853/525 one), wheels, bars & stem on Craigslist over the summer for $150. I initially set it up with my usual 120mm stem, but was too stretched out and put a 100mm on it. It's a 58cm with a 59cm TT.

That would be one heck of a tribute display.

Of note:
LeMond is an avid outdoor enthusiast and fly angler and in 1991 while still racing full time he made the world record fly fishing catch of a four pound smallmouth bass on a reel with a four-pound tippet. The record was certified by the National Freshwater Fishing Hall of Fame in Hayward, Wisconsin.

After retiring from pro cycling, LeMond competed in Formula Ford 2000 series auto racing.

Its just that that the long top tube makes the fit awkward.

A road bike with proportional sized tubes is more comfortable.

Fixed it.
Some of us like a layed out position without as much standover. Guess it depends upon body type & riding preference. I think in one of his books GL referred to 'stage racing geometry' on his high end bikes.

I prefer a more normal upright position.

People prefer an endurance road geometry over the racing road geometry.

It feels more natural.

Reviving this as I research. Anyone have insight on the SLX version of these old Greg Lemonds? I've got a Cromor Ventoux that I love but wonder how one of these built with SLX would differ, feel on the road?

53 cm Tourmelet:

54 cm Ventoux:

55 cm Zurich:

Love them in. In my book Greg knew exactly what he was doing with this geometry.
