1958 Raleigh Canadian--Anyone ever seen one of these?
I bought this the other day from my school's Bike Co-Op-- they occasionally have a few "special interest" bikes like this for sale...1958 S/A TCW hub, 28" roadster wheels, all the components are the original Raleigh branded ones. Pretty solid condition considering the age--the biggest bummer is the poor condition of the chaincase--though considering the flimsy construction, it's not too surprising.
The weird part is the frame. I've never seen a Raleigh frame like this, with bolt on stays and the rear facing dropouts, and it has me wondering if, despite the "made in England" decal, the frame was actually made by CCM--it looks very similar to a CCM Rambler, though obviously with a Raleigh fork and other parts. Serial is in the normal seat cluster spot though...RC54508 (which, now that I think about it, doesn't match the '58 hub. Hmmmm)
Now on to pics!

Can't help too much on your frame, but the decals look very similar to the Raleigh Laurentian, yet another Canadian market bike ( @gster has one on his site). So I would guess the decals are original and the frame is indeed a Raleigh.

It was common up to the 60's for utility bikes to have bolt-on seat stays and rear-facing ends. Why would anyone take the immense effort to respray & decal a CCM? Didn't CCM favour ashtabula cranks on its utility bikes? Looks like a genuine Raleigh to me. If it has 26 TPI threading it is a Raleigh.
Congrats on a very nice bike whatever it is!

I don't doubt that this was originally sold as a Raleigh, I had just never seen a Raleigh frame with the curved top tube and bolt on stays, and was wondering if Raleigh of Canada contracted out for this specific bike.
I didn't think about the bottom bracket, that's a good point
Well, either way, it's a sweet bike, and will be getting a full refurb--both hubs need rebuilding, and it's crying out for a genuine leather Brooks

Did a little looking and the bolt on seat stays, wishbone chain stays and the rear facing drops appear to be common on the DL1 models, which makes you think this is a Canadian market bike based on the DL1. Curved top tube is interesting still.

Wow, now I'm really feeling dumb, I've seen lots of DL-1's and never realized they had bolt on stays.
Heck, I was just looking at one a couple days ago.

Here's a page with a brief description of this model. Notice the fenders have stamped stays and not the wire stays of the DL-1. Smaller frame too. 22" or 20" for the step through. Looks like the 3 speed coaster brake hub was an extra cost option. I'm thinking that this enclosed chaincase isn't original to the bike. Can't say with any certainty though.

The later Raleigh Space Rider (24 x 1 3/8 wheels) had a curved top tube but this is the first DL-1 type with bolt-on stays and reverse dropouts I've seen with one. Looks like a Raleigh to me.

Those rims (if original) 28 x 1 1/2 (Canadian) are different than the Raleigh rims with the same markings and take a different tire.

Raleigh made a number of models for the Canadian market that differed somewhat from their counterparts, sometimes it was just different paint colours and in a few cases like this, slightly different frames... the curve in the top tube gives it a superficial resemblance to the CCM Rambler but CCM used one piece cranks as well as rear facing dropouts and bolted seat stays.
The F13 rims are also a Canadian sizing for a 622mm rim... also common on CCM who never used the 635mm British oversize.

From the photo it appears that the chaincase is made of vinyl or plastic coated fabric which has been installed over a steel chain guard. Is that the case?
