If I decide later that I must have Campy, I'll just buy the pods and a set of braze-on shifters from Ebay. They seem to be plentiful and not too spendy.

The Suntour's ratcheting action is really nice- but, IMO, not as nice as the Sachs/Huret mid-80s ratcheting shifters and those aren't as nice as the Simpex Retrofrictions.

IMO and all that.

I have used Suntours on several bikes and think they're great. However, a kind BF member has messaged me with a great deal on some Silver shifters, so it looks like I'll be trying those instead this time.

Simplex Retrofriction downtube levers for band mounting can be made to work, but you would need the band to rob for parts. These are Shimano pods, but the Riv pods are the same.

You can buy nylon ( at least nylon-looking) washers at the hardware store in those specialty hardware boxes. I did for a Record clamp to braze-on conversion that I have yet to try.

Hmm - how are those working for you? I tried that, and the shifters just didn't pull enough cable before stopped by the pod. I think I was running a Suntour RD, maybe a Cyclone. Would the demultiplicator doohicky fix that?

The "demultiplicator doohickey" will make it pull less cable. Maybe Suntour RDs are a bad match with those shifters.

Why is the stop there? Why not let the pod be the stop?

Yes, the Simplex retrofriction downtube levers have a smaller diameter barrel than SunTour shifters (14.2mm vs. 20.9mm) and thus will pull less cable. Since barends are already limited to about 90° of travel (downtube levers can travel nearly 180°), the smaller barrel may not work in the barend pod for a derailleur expecting more cable pull.
