Sachs Aris LY 9X Freewheel Questions

I have a 7 speed Sachs Aris (LY-9X). I can get an 8 speed Sachs Aris (LY-9X).

Can I swap out the threaded 1st (12t) and the threaded 2nd (14t) on the 7 speed with the threaded 1st (13t) and threaded 3rd (15t) from the 8 speed?

Is the 8 speed and 7 speed freewheel body the same?

Thanks for any information.

John

Can't help with 8 to 7 but I did 7 to 6.

Steven at Loose Screws helped me out - he has a large selection of mallard cogs and has experimented with all sorts of conversions.

Heres some info on the 6 & 7

good luck

I stumbled upon FreeWheelSpa and sent my question off to Bob.

He has a ton of information, but he wasn't positive that I could leapfrog cogs from an 8 speed and then put them together on a 7 speed. But he had 13t and 15t cogs, so I decided to get them from him.

He did say that the 8 speed freewheel body is a few mm wider.

Rally nice guy and super helpful.

to get to adding the axle breaking 8th speed, (a 12t) 7th is internally threaded and in turn screws into the next larger cog .

I forget all the letter codes .. though I own 2 Aris freewheels. i sent an 8 speed back when they were still available ..

you have to remove the small cogs to get the thing off..

and as I said the extra extension on the right end to get that 8th cog in, means axles are even more prone to breaking..

time to get a Freehub then .. the axle support bearing moves outboard.

70sSanO wasn't trying to move up to the 8 speed Sachs Aris. He just wanted to harvest sprockets from the 8 speed to regear his 7 speed Sachs.

Glad to help out! The 13T and 15T sprockets will be in the mail before the end of the afternoon. Happy riding on the west coast! Looks as if winter, which has been late in coming, will arrive on Sunday. Riding will be hit or miss now until the end of April. Time to update my signature line!

Someone is kind enough to keep the website for the long defunct BikePro.com going. There's a ton of info available there.

Here's the page on Sachs ARIS freewheels - scroll down to the 3rd paragraph for info on sprockets:

Sachs Aris Bike Freewheel - the Buyer's Guide, 2015

I have some 8 speed ARIS freewheels that I acquired years ago. At one point I even built up a couple of Campy rear hubs to 130mm OLN width... But common sense prevailed and I used cassette hubs instead.
