75 Voyaguer II & Sugino XD-2 Crank

After 40 years, I am changing the 1st generation Shimano Dura-Ace double crank (52-39 with pants guard) with an XD-2 triple (46-36-24) from RBW, for the extra low gearing. If I had the 1st gen D/A triple, I would not change it out. I think the crank is very nice looking and have received compliments on it.

Question 1,[ Has any body done this an kept the original Shimano BB spindle????
The Dura Ace double 39 inner ring just barely clears the chain stay.

Question 2. Has any one measured the original BB spindle width and have the number handy???
I did years ago, but misplaced the paper I wrote it on. I think it was 109mm width. RBW states the XD-2 will fit a frame with normal stays using a 109 mm spindle. Maybe the XD2 has the rings set further out.

Question 3, Anyone know of an available triple??

FWIW, I did a quick measurement on the installed crank and got a Q of 139mm. Pretty narrow by todays standard. Any did a more accurate measurement or have the Shimano details.

The spindle for a first generation BB 7200 double 68mm bottom bracket would be marked "68 W 112"

Thanks John, sounds like a 112mm width. Thanks for the Shimano 7200 model number.

John

Do you happen to know if the taper is JIS or ISO??? I would think Shimano would use the JIS taper in 1975.

The taper on the original Shimano GB-100 bottom bracket is JIS.

Or keep your crankset and pick up a Willow triplizer chainring. You can get them from Rivendell I think or pick up a complete setup(three rings and all hardware and spacers) Brand new for 50 shipped.. Just another idea since you said you liked your cranks. Just pick up a new bb or even just a spindle.

Must say I really like the XD2 triple, have used one on several bikes and all used a 110 sized BB. Well made, nice looking, a solid piece of equipment.

Most recently set one up as a compact triple with 50/34/24 rings and when combined with an 11/28 set of cogs it gave me all the gearing I needed at both ends as well as a nice midrange.
