Do folks remember fondly Anybody's Bike Book? That was a load of fun and very informative, too.
I had a Glenn's Manual for many years. Recently, I mentioned here that I couldn't find it, and a very kind BF member sent me his old copy. It's a classic. The black and white pictures are very clear, and the lab coats are rather funny. Some procedures would be considered obsolete, but it's still a darned good book.

1970 - helping my Dad patch a flat on my "english racer". It was a Raleigh single speed we got at a garage sale. I tried to convince kids it was cooler than their Stingrays with banana seats, but couldn't do wheelies or jump ramps 'cause my weight wouldn't shift far enough back.
I suppose the difference in sustainability is due to the high centre of gravity of a 10 speed wheelie compared with a banana seat wheelie, making the 10 speed wheelie much less stable.
That is the only kind of gloves I wear, at least on the warmer half of the cycling days per year. Fortunately, there are many retro suppliers, still.
Certainly I do, my copy that I still have, somewhere , handed down from my dad.

Kids these days (which sounds like the beginning of an angry sentence) can do prolonged wheelies on any kind of bike. I never learned to do them on any kind.

Show me the quote and the time when Eddy said it was cool. They were more utilitarian than cool back in the 60's, but about a decade and a half after better headgear came along, cycling caps became props for Boy George and George Michael.
Feel sorry for my fellow old-timers who liked wearing them, (I never did even when racing in NL, Belgium, & Germany when it was actually cold enough to warrant wearing something under one's leather hairnet), but their fashion has been commandeered by someone else (who perhaps also shave their legs.)
Between that and their cannibalization of our rainbow jersey, the culture of cycling has been very generous to gay culture.

With a banana seat, you could slide back until your butt was over or even past the rear axle, and lift the bike - then it was a matter of balancing your weight and the bike's weight. Much harder with a classical diamond frame.

Yes, doing a "manual" before it was called such by the newschoolers.

Those are getting rare. I found one 10yrs ago for 10$ at a thrift shop, I think it was the "Wind" model?? Had Rigida 700c, diacompe centerpulls, ishiwata 022 and most memorably a Suntour BL rear derailleur.

Visually, they stood out with a blue vinyl (?) band across the derailleur body. I dont think they were produced in large numbers and seriously dont think they were lighter than a first or second gen Cyclone of the earlier production. Wish I had more info to share with you.

Yes reading is fundamental. I read that it is sad your primary association with a cycling cap having the bill turned up is negative in your eyes. As an "old timer" myself, I never gave any thought to the pop culture aspect and could care less if some facet took a liking to cycling caps. Well I would probably draw the line at ISIS/terrorists but they aren't pop culture.

I never progressed beyond the 'hop and try-not-to-fall-off-when-the-wheel-comes-down' stage. I was rubbish then, and I've not tried again since...

I put them on my Univega Specialissima back in the day. IIRC they were positioned one notch below the Cyclone II (the 'aero' one) when those came out. They always seemed to me to be almost exactly the same as a Cyclone I, except with blue paint stripe instead of a black paint stripe...

I was only a kid, but I am sure that men would not have worn a scarf like that. Gold chains and leisure suits were actually worn, unfortunately.

That dude's outfit reminds me of every feminine hygiene commercial in the 70's... (which, I didn't comprehend at the time).
