Vintage Trek 531 frame with odd fork
What do you make of this very nice Trek bike with an odd non-original fork? Anyone see this fork before?
The frame is Reynolds 531 but I'm surprised to see the braze-on cable guides that I've only seen on Columbus-equipped Trek frames. Serial is 040100. Probably a Trek 710. Nice bike and I've already got one. I'm going to pass at an asking price of $400 (though it is overhauled/restored).

According to the serial, it's an '82 613. Non original fork. Does the seller have the original?

Fork is definitely non-original, as Trek never offered a chrome fork. Frame looks like a 6nn or 7nn series frame. Any more photos of the frame and rear dropouts in particular?

I believe oddjob2 is referencing a fork breakage issue.
Before I start doing heavy riding on my 81 614, I may have to solicit input to find out how many 81 & 82 owners have these 600 series forks and how many actually had a death fork issue.

No, the problematic Ishiwata crown was an external, stamped crown. Yours looks like an internal, investment cast crown.

Not a bad looking non-original fork!

The older Treks would have had the cable guides as options on every frame- around 82 they became standard on everything.
