Lets see your pre 60's racing/sports bikes
Lets see your pre 60's British racing/sports bikes. The older the better! Here's some pics of my unfinished 1935 Raleigh Golden Arrow Super Sport to get it going. :)

Lots of cool parts on there. And the decals are in great shape.
There is a Dunelt listed locally that is pretty stripped down and set up as a simple racer that looks really cool. Better looking than a lot of today's fixed gears Imo. |
I guess I should not have sold my Armstrong and my Hercules. :)
I really like your top tube gear change. |
I built this one for the Velo Cheapo contest last year:
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-P...2/DSC00566.JPG https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-X...2/DSC00568.JPG It's actually a 1970s Raleigh Sports frame made to look like a 1930s racer! But here's a 1934 Sports that's in my herd: https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-D...FBD8CCEDBB.JPG I bought it from a friend as frame/fork only, and it's built with a mishmash of components, including new steel Soma Lauterwasser bars. And jumping ahead a decade or so, here's my 1949 Raleigh Clubman: https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-U.../IMAGE_525.jpg And my 1952 Raleigh Lenton Sports: https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-6...2/IMG_2376.JPG |
Here's my 1946 Hobbs of Barbican. I'm still on the look out for a suitable crankset.

Nice bikes for sure !
I feel so left out.. |
I was hoping we'd see some wooden rims in this thread, and we did! :D
|
Wow, some really neato bikes all!
Pre 60's and British. I'll play ;) You're probably questioning the French Peugeot but with British Petroleum livery. Keep guessing~ made in London, full Reynolds 531 butted, Nervex Professional lugs, Campagnolo dropouts and fork ends. 23 lbs. as shown. The ride is magical. https://farm1.staticflickr.com/566/2...c02fbe18_b.jpg |
Do I spy an RHM original too? ^^
|
^Of course! Though in regards to this one, admit I don't have a heavy accumulated mile / longevity report about it. I have a fear of riding very vintage leather saddles so along with Clements plus brake pads, it the only newish piece on it.
|
I typically try to avoid cluttering this type of thread with ata boys, but these are too compeling to resist. Gorgeous bikes.

'48 Baines Eccolite and '55 Condor

The red Condor was my first older British bike, and really opened my eyes as to how nicely some of these can ride. Both of these bikes have light frames that are comfortable to ride but still feel very lively and fast. The Baines has a few newer parts on it and is especially light, at just under 20 lb set up as a 4-speed.

The hits just keep on coming. Great thread.

Do any of you IGH afficionados know when S-A discontinued the top tube gear change and when they introduced the familiar trigger?
When I built my 3x4 hybrid system, I thought I was being fiendishly clever by tucking the IGH gear change trigger under the (left -- to facilitate double shifts) brake handle, until I later learned that this was a popular configuration with drop bars. It was almost a sort of original poor man's brifter. |
That's a gorgeous bike.

Great bikes so far people!
