Got a schwinn cromoly frame road bike
I know, Pics - but sadly dark already and its in the car still. It says 4130 on the lower seat post tube.
I believe it is a lugged frame.
It has no model name that I can see. Have to look is detail in a day or so.
It has flat bars not that it cant be a replacement.
Split Quill @ the bar (where some one cranked it to 100 lbft).
27" steel rims.
5 speed rear.
2 speed front with sugino Maxi crank.
Shift levers on the lower tube 3" from the steering neck.
Thanks.
Srinath.

Sounds like an 82 Schwinn Mystery EX.

Le Tour model of some sort is my fully uneducated guess.

Srinath,
Glad to hear that you are adding a Schwinn to your collection. Many of us have enjoyed them and learned a lot when we worked on them.
When you can, let us know more details so we can help you identify the model.
If it were me, I'd be climbing into the backseat with a flashlight that night like it was date night !
Enjoy.

My indestructible workhorse is an old cromoly Super Sport. You could definitely do worse, whatever it is.

To deepen the plot ...
Looking @ this -
Schwinn World Sport
It has the Schwinn decal @ the same location as the 87 world sport.
Shifters like the 88 le tour or 89 world sport.
And the wheels have huge shoulder hubs like a 79 world sport.
And has sugino maxi crank with a shiny chrome looking center cap and it says "sugino" on the arm.
I cant find 1 bike that fits all of these. Some sorta bastiod ???
Wheels are easy to swap. Frames and decals are not - and shifters too. Is there any other way to find it ? I don't think I'll find the decal on the frame with model.
Thanks.
Srinath.

Match the decal/color combination to the old Schwinn catalogs available online for model.
Or reference the SN with an online database to get the year of manufacture.
Or both.

not enough decal left
I cant tell what the decal looked like. There isn't enough of it left.
I wouldn't even know it read Schwinn unless the neck badge affirmed my guess.
Presumably it was one of those Schwinn decals that has horizontal lines through it, and not the solid type.
Cool.
Srinath.

What color is it? That could potentially tell a lot!
Also, there should be a 4 digit number stamped into the headbadge. For the period you are talking about, this would correspond to the day of the year it was made and the year it was made. So 3278 would mean it was made on the 327th day of 1988 (or potentially 1978). That could help us narrow it down a bunch!
Off the top of my head, we can definitely rule out some possibilities. First of all, it is cromoly so it is not a Varsity!
The Sugino crank doesnt tell me too much since I think different Sugino cranks were on top end and low end Schwinns throughout the late 70s and 80s. Perhaps someone else would know more about this.
The 4130 cromoly tubing says to me that it is probably an 80s bike. I believe 4130 was on higher end Schwinns in the early 80s, but slowly made their way to lower end bikes in the late 80s as newer materials came around.
The downtube shifters rule out some of the later 80s bikes like the Caliente or Worldsport.
Any more pictures or information would be helpful!
So if we are looking for a 4130 cromoly frame with downtube shifters, Im hoping it is a Le Tour or a Voyageur!

Awesome - Headbadge says 0203.
20th day of 83 ?
OK That helps the googling.
Its a sort of brown-ish steel grey in color.
Thanks.

The shifters correspond to the super Le Tour, The name decal also matches, it could be that dark grey with platinum color, but, the wheels dont match anything in the 83 lineup, the hub shoulders are huge on mine, and the rear is a 5 speed, not a 6 that you need for a 12 speed. So I suspect, someone swapped out the wheels @ some point. It does have a suntour arx in the front atleast, so its a Super Le Tour with some unholy bastard wheels.
So tell me, did I hit the jackpot ??? no ... dangggit.
Atleast its a super leTour. You know, Like Super man.
Thanks.
Srinath.

There is a little ding right under the shifters likely where the wheel may have hit it if there was a mishap.
The frame seems straight, but defininitely was hit by something (likely a out of round wheel).
Explains the wheel mismatch as well as the ding IMHO.
Thanks.

Srinath, you stumbled upon my point. It's too hard to guess what you have with only a description. Ask your questions when you can post pictures. Otherwise, you're asking us to do your work for you and not even making it possible.
