I thought Gazelle's were bikes.

Yikes! That was some impact. I'm not one of those vehement helmet advocates, but it's likely the helmet did really save his life in this case.

Yep! Had a carhole come out of a side street today and I had to veer way into the next lane to avoid another side impact.

They should drug test that Gazelle. Looked like it was on steroids, and should be disqualified.

I came very close to being hit by a deer the same way coming downhill on a mountain trail one night. Some big male deer appears and dashes across the trail a second before me. That shook me up but I was near the end of the ride anyway.

Who knows their African wildlife? I don't think that was a gazelle.

I've been about maybe 100 yards from an adult male elk before, separated by a 2-lane highway and a fence that looked pretty useless. Yes, I was on a bicycle, and never felt so vulnerable in my life. Lucky for me, he was preoccupied with some nice mountain vegetation, & he must not have seen me as a threat. Which was real lucky for me, he was probably around 6 times my size.

I biked through a herd of bison that were crossing/napping on the road at Yellowstone once. Got within probably 5 feet of one. They didn't seem to even notice us. I also had a squirrel jump on my downtube as I rode through campus then jump off like 20 feet later. Both scary incidents.

My biggest fear is riding on a sidewalk. I used to do that when going slow or to be casual but you are better off in the road. People don't look down the sidewalk when they pull out and go out as far as they can to see down the road.

Similar almost happened to me this morning near my work in downtown SF, when a hipster type almost hit me as I was crossing the street on the way to a meeting. And he had the stop sign too...
Yelled at him to watch it, and he actually had the nerve to yell back at me " No!, you watch it!".
It's effing jerks like that biker that gives us a bad name!
This was certainly not the first time I was almost hit by rude cyclists in the streets of SF, and it's just getting worse!

Unless you have direct experience in Africa or watch a lot of nature shows you have probably only seen Grant's and Thomson's gazelles. There are maybe a half dozen species of gazelles in Africa and more than a dozen antelope species many of which could have been that guy from what I could see.

Too bad, because "gnu dung" is a palindrome.

It was a Hartebeest. Scary big. 330 lbs with a top speed of 34mph. That guy got absolutely clobbered.

A hartebeest! Thank you, I'm glad we have that cleared up.
Is the hartebeest technically an antelope? I believe that the wildebeest (gnu) is.

I almost had that happen to me once, during a race. However, in my case it was cow that bolted through a fence, as we passed a diary farm.
