Sturmey Archer classic trigger shifter on rotary hub?

Hi all,

Just a quick question. I seem to be unable to find any info on this online and the Sturmey-Archer site does not have info as far as I can tell - but can the classic 3-speed trigger shifter be used on the new rotary hub such as the RS-RF3? If it all comes down to it, I can try it myself but if anybody happens to know, I would rather not go through all the extra work.

Thanks in advance.

Did they give you any idea what would work? They have a variety of different twist, thumb, and trigger shifters for three-speed IGHs. I looked at the RS-RF3 page and the page of three-speed shifter specs. I didn't see any mention in either place of which shifters were compatible with which hubs.

Ah. I looked on the site earlier, I do agree it is inconvenient that the shifters that do work are not listed with the hubs, but they say that separately in the shifter catalog. I think there are three there that work specifically with the rotary 3-speed hubs: a twist shifter, a thumb shifter, and a paddle shifter. I forget the model numbers.

Really a shame that they are not designed to be cross-compatible though because as is the case with me, there are many people who are outfitting an old frame with new rims and hubs (i'm only doing this because the '69 Raleigh frame I received was bare and my RS-RF3 needs a home - I actually love the classic AW hub) and I find the old trigger shifter to be much easier to use than any other kind of shifter that exists.
