that "need the last piece" blues

You guys ever get stuck on that ONE last piece of a build?

I have a build in my stand that just needs cranks, and and I refuse to pay retail for them, so I just have to watch ebay like a hawk or wait till the next swap meet (and pray)...

It feel like needing to sneeze ... for weeks.

Does this happen to you, or do you get more spendy as the build progresses to finish...

It absolutely happens to me. If it's bothering you, compromise. It's a time/money tradeoff, but keep your eye on your goals and don't be too purist.

I never start until I have the parts.
Then I change everything anyway.

I'm eager to know what specific cranks you want? Maybe someone here has something? Heck, I'm feeling generous.

Yeah, what are you looking for specifically? Have you tried the Want To Buy option here?

I'd be willing to bet someone here has what you're looking for and would be willing to let you have it for a competitive price (compared to Ebay or CL, that is).

Huffy's and Next MTBs are the bulk of the offerings on our CL.

Yeah the issue is that while the cranks are going ON a C&V bike the cranks I'm looking/waiting for aren't so C or V... some thing like these...

Campagnolo Campy Carbon Crankset 172 5 Compact | eBay

oh the temptation...

Well, you never know. A lot of the guys/gals here do the vintage frame/modern components theme. I'd still try out this thread just in case: https://www.bikeforums.net/classic-vi...rts-2-3-a.html

If we ever get a C&V bike on CL it's not cheap. Somebody tries to pay for their spring break trip with it.

And yes, I'm down to needing clamp-on shifters (cheap) and alloy seat post (currently have an ano black one) on my latest build. But I'm in no hurry.

Yes, I am.

I have a 1984 Raleigh USA Super Course that has the propriety shifter boss and thread pitch. Love this frame !

Found the piece that will mesh with the boss but no proper shifter bolt on the 600's I want to use.

Notice the notch in the inside cap. Only thing holding up this build!

I am to the point of thinking about cutting the notch down and see what will work with the boss that way.

AARRRH !!

What exactly are you looking for? I have an 84 Competition that I retro modded with cable stops where the shifters were. I still have the shifters. Would they be what you need?

+1 It happens to me all the time as well. Don't stress yourself out about it; finish the project with a reasonable stand-in and swap it out for the 'right' part when it eventually turns up.

I am living it now. I tried ISO thread. No luck. I am bidding on a Cinelli XA 100, 26.0 stem now with hopes I win. Do you know how many people list stems on eBay that have no idea of the clamp size? OH boy!!

Wow. You must be very, very patient.

I often wait with building my bike until I got all the main parts (wheels, cockpit, group set) but never have the patience and memory to collect all the correct cables, lines, handlebar wraps etc.

Right now my Centurion Elite RS is the only bike in need to be a 100% finished. I was trying to make it full 600EX and the only thing missing is a 27.0 600 EX/AX seatpost, everything else is 600EX, 120 stem, Brakes & levers, Derailleurs & Shifters & Cranks, Headset ( Not installed yet ) Replacement Araya Wheelset with 600 Hubs. The prices are crazy ( to me anyway ) for a 600 27.0 seatpost, stems are also up there but I picked up a like new 120mm hidden bolt 600 stem for under $25. I even have two Shimano 600EX Decals that go on the seat tube, that I have been waiting to install.

Are you sure you can't sand down a 27.2? It's only .1mm each side. My hat's off to you, though.

They aren't exactly cheap either lol, I have thought about it and do keep an eye out, but would rather have a 27.0 and spend time cleaning & polishing it up. Thanks to you Robbie I am close to being done with this and my Miyata 512 105 conversion.
