Quest for Original Benotto Cello Tape
Now, I know Benotto started making this again a couple of years ago, but it seems thicker and loses that semi-transparent goodness that I yearn for. I have looked high and low but so far have been unsuccessful in my quest to acquire their original tape in yellow for a like-for-like replacement on an early 80's Coppi.
I can only find the new stuff or a ludicrous price for the NOS on eBay. Yellow Jersey only has the new stuff. Vintage Velo has it but it'll cost $70CAD total to get it to Canada...
It must have been one of the most popular colours back in the day, one would have thought there'd still be stock somewhere! Do any of you folks know where else one could procure it? Or perhaps even had a roll or two in your own basement that you'd be willing to sell?
Any help greatly appreciated. T

I one bought a bar, stem, and brake handle combination at a swap, in part for the new yellow celo tape they were wrapped with. Sharing your enthusiasm for the original...

Ditto. I'd love some yellow for one of my projects, but I've decided to settle on something that is readily available.

The "Benotto" reissue tape appears to be something other than celluloid, vinyl perhaps and looks different. I'm not sure what the thinking was. The whole point of cello tape was the iridescent look.
I found a few other people selling cello style tape, but they are all in the UK. Stuff seems to be made in Taiwan.

Geez this stuff used to be around on ebay for pretty cheap. I picked up like a dozen rolls a few years ago from shop where I used to live thinking I hit gold. But I had the hardest time selling it and now don't bat an eye if I see in a shop collecting dust. I picked up a roll of yellow for my Guerc on ebay last year and happy with it and paid maybe 10 bucks. Normally I need squishy bar tape but never had issues with it and I don't wear gloves either.

I think Cycles De Oro in Greensboro, NC still has some of the old stuff. Not sure which colours. I have seen the new stuff that is put out by Benotto there as well.

I think I know a source for yellow tape. I will try to get over there in the next week.

Never tried it, but eBay seller Velo bitz has what appears to be an excellent reproduction. I can't get enough of Benotto tape. Just looking at it makes me happy.

(or maybe not hypothetically...?)
I took a quick peek at the completed listings for yellow Benotto cello tape, and only found one auction that ended and is marked "sold", but the price, $39, is crossed out. It was also marked as "best offer accepted".
There are currently other colors of Benotto that are BIN for $7. That seems pretty cheap in general.
or perhaps this is venturing too far into the appraisal area, although most folks don't ask for appraisals for bar tape.

I think $10 + $5 shipping is fair and I'd pay it any day of the week. I'd prefer to double-up and give someone $25/shipped for 2 rolls. That's what it's worth to me, at least, right now. It's non-adhesive rubbery tape and it's not totally unheard of to nick during install and cause a perpendicular tear that ruins the roll so ... anything over $10/roll +$5 ship is too steep for something aged which was already prone to tear back when it was "new".
I've been skipping on the sketch rolls from China recently ranging $8-$23. Using correct terms, you'll find periodically on ebay.it and ebay.fr cheaper but int'l shipping runs you around $17-$20/roll. The $39/roll listing you cited is one of the more absurd ones considering how you could be out all of your money in a heartbeat if you have an installation error.

I checked the shop that had some tape recently but they have sold off their stash.

Yellow seems to be the most popular on Ebay. Stuff doesn't last long at all.

Anyone have any luck? Think I'll give the cheap knock-off version a try, purely because of overbearing impatience

Scored one pack on Ebay that is the correct yellow, original vintage. Got another pack that looked yellow, was advertised as yellow, but it's gold.
