Peugeot serial number

I have what I think is an 1985 or 1986 peugeot pipeline 5, the serial number is MI88406280. It doesn't seem to follow the pattern that I have read about on this brand of bikes with the Y33 serial numbers. Also, this number isn't straight below the bb, it is stamped underneath the down tube towards the bb...does that seem normal to you all here? Any help in identifying the actual year would be great. I originally thought 1980 but it has the logo that ran from 82-90 on it...

It doesn't seem the least bit normal for the typical road bike, which is where I'm better versed, so take with a grain of salt. Can you post some pics of the bike? Drive-side overall shot, picture of the drivetrain, head tube and lugs, seat cluster, etc?

Yes, the Asian serial numbers differ radically from the French system. No guarantees, and just a guess, but that initial 8 might indicate 1988, which would be consistent with your decals.

The Pipeline series were commuters/city bicycles. The serial number does sound like 1988 would be a definite possibility but the Pipeline 5 was not catalogued that year, at least in the USA, where it was offered from 1985-1987. Pictures may help narrow down the year.

Exactly, or a hybrid? Not sure I can help on this one, I just know the road bikes. S/N looks Asian to me.

Sorry i should have posted pics in the initial post.
https://flic.kr/p/EC68Sr
This was taken during my modifications to the bike. I also replaced the pedals, crankset, and bb. I still have the original bars and neck. Unfortunately, the bike is in police evidence where it will remain for a few more months. I thought they would return it to me sooner, but not unless I pay the pawn shop it turned up at the amount they paid for the bike. So instead I will take it to trial and should get it back for free at that point.

Also, that seat which I do not think is original was black and I re-upolstered with light brown vinyl.

With a few exceptions, serial numbers for most production bike brands are generally meaningless. All of the classic French marques are long gone with little or no records or traceability!

There are good records for classic Schwinn and Trek. Also some good serial number records for Raleigh and a few other Brit makes. The French seems to have used what ever number stamps they had handy after a 2 litre wine lunch!

I have two 1988 Peugeot Biarritz bikes with the same serial numbers!

Save the numbers for the Loto!

I laughed out loud, reading this. No wonder you don't hear much about French serial numbers. My Peugeot Vagabond was made in Canada, and as close as I can tell, they only made this model in 1984 & 1985. I'd kinda like to think the Canucks kept better records, than the continental French, but I won't be too heartbroken, either way, I guess.

The serial number is consistent with a 1988 model manufactured by Mien Tien Hang of Taiwan. For some reason, I initially overlooked the Pipeline in my 1988 literature. It was catalogued in the USA.

The only reason there are such good serial number records for makes such as Raleigh, Schwinn and Trek is because they are so popular and people have investigated the serialization formats. The only reason other formats appear meaningless is because people have not devoted the time to them. Just about any serial number format can be broken down with sufficient data from owners and a good supply of brand literature.

There are far more than a few exceptions of known serial number formats. Concentrating on Asian manufacturers, I have decyphered and documented the formats for about two dozen Asian manufacturers which encompass about five dozen popular brands. There has also been major progress on some major non-Asian brands such as Bianchi, CCM and Peugeot. The number will only continue to grow, if bicycle owners co-operate with providing data for members like Hummer and myself.
