I got it for $300 and it is my first road bike.

looks decent...I think it's an '89, but sure someone will correct me if not accurate.

clean it up, put on new tires and bar tape, level the saddle, and ride it hard.

1989.
That's a nice Ironman. Don't forget to post on the Ironman thread and centurion serial number thread.
You did great.
Kinda unfortunate this is your first road bike in that you may not realize (by way of comparison) how good that bike really is. Then again after a tune up/clean up you'll probably "get it."

+1. 1989, the last year for the Ironman and the only year that the Expert version came equipped with SunTour.

1989 "Expert" model.
Tange 1 frame/fork
Tange Levin CD headset
Tange bottom bracket, square taper, ball bearing.
Suntour GPX 52/42 crankset, Suntour 7-sp 13-24 freewheel. Chain rings anodized, silver painted crank arms.
Suntour GPX silver/dark gray FD 28.6 clamp-on, GPX silver/dark grey short cage RD, GPX dark grey hidden spring calipers.
Suntour GPX brake levers, dark grey with white hoods. Should have had an SR seat post, I think.
Saddle was either a Turbo or the Vetta version of the Turbo, some of the later ones had an Avenir decal on the rear of the top tube.
Hubs were Suntour GPX ball bearing, laced with stainless spokes to Araya CTL-370 hard anodized dark grey rims.
Original tires in 1989 were Panaracer Technova II, 700x18 but also labeled as 700x19, not sure why.
Stem was a Nitto Young, bars were Nitto B115, with 39cm bars 54cm and below, 420cm bars 56cm and up.

Nice bike, anecdotally the quickest geometry of the Ironman years. Easy to touch up, being black.

Once those 27-year old wheels are trued and tensioned, and the bike lubed and adjusted, you'll amaze your friends.

Just wondering, what is the standard of a good bike? Good frame? Good components?

Providing your bike fits: Then,a good bike in my experience.
1.Accelerates when you stomp on the pedals, those wheels with some good tires will guarantee that.
2.Feels like you're conquering a hill instead of being defeated by it, (once in good fitness), nothing on that bike will hinder you from doing just that.
3.Stays in a straight line allowing you to concentrate all your energy on going forward, the italian geometry allows you to do that.
4.Nice color frame, hard to find black beauty you can't go wrong.
5.Dependable components.
6.Winning pedigree, Dave Scott won a few triathlons on it.
7.And the number one thing that makes a good bike (for me) is Value,Regardless of price. The relative low price is because of mass quantity not low quality. @ jetboy
After all that, there is lot more that makes a Centurion Ironman a good bike.

You have an Ironman. You're covered.

That, and it is an aphrodisiac.
