How do you pronounce Mavic?
The only reason I ask is a coworker just had a son. She and her husband both race, and named their first son Mavic. They pronounce it like Maverick, without the er.
I'm saying Ma-VEEK.
I'm saying Ma-VEEK.

Je dis 'mahVEEK' parce que Mavic est un société Français - and also just for fun because it never fails to get a response out of customers/coworkers. Never mind that they're technically part of a Finnish conglomerate now, it's still a French company.

That boy's got a life of explaining ahead of him...until he eventually adopts his middle name, or simply decides to say, "Just call me Mav."
I think you're saying it right (as Mah-veek), but I still pronounce it like your co-worker. It's been my habit since before I knew better.

Doesn't it depend on the language you're speaking? Or does a person - or his parents, if the person doesn't speak - control how the name is pronounced?
My bet is that the company should be pronounced 'ma-veek' and the kid, 'Mavik'.

Considering that it is an acronym, it should probably be spelled out, as opposed to pronounced as a word. Since it isn't a proper word, there isn't any correct pronunciation, but if you take the phonetics from the non-abbreviated form, it would come out mah-veek. That is how I pronounce it.

The first shop that I worked at in the early 70's was a large Gitane dealer and kept upwards of 50 bikes on the showroom floor.
The manager had a masters in French. He was a nice guy but always corrected our French pronunciations...
"It's ZGEE-TAW not GET-TAN, GET-TAIN, GET-TAWNEE...."
He taught us to say MAW-VEEK. (and MAW-FAC)
France should change to phonetic spelling!

Chas. Is it wrong... or just French!

I've always said mah vick, until an older Italian guy got fairly upset about it, and informed me it was mah vee, with no c pronounced at all. I kinda thought he might be right, since I never cared much one way or the other, but then I wondered why an Italian guy would know for sure. He's not French, dammit.
