Classic riding shoes, where are the large sizes?

Can someone tell me about the Giro Republic shoes? Are they compatible with quill pedals, toe clips and straps? The on line stores have them at reasonable prices, but the details say these are SPD, or 2 screw attachment soles. Anyone with experience, or knowledge about these shoes, please give me your input. I have been looking around and know that Giro has several lace up models availale, but they get pricey, fast.

If anyone knows where I can find larger size vintage shoes (46-48 European sizing,) Detto Pietro, or other brands, too, please direct me to them. These would be perfect, and I am familiar with riding in them from use in the late 70s-early 90s.

I have a pair of Giro Republics and like them very much.

Fit - my foot is a normal 11 and the 45s are perfect. The lacing system works well to snug up the whole shoe.

I use them with SPD pedals (Shimano A-520s) - The combo works very well for me.

But one of the reasons I got them was as a backup for Eroica. (I ended up getting some other shoes so didnt have to go this direction.

I took a quick look at fitting them into a clip, but between the walking pads and large toe box, the toe clip would have to be pretty high in the front to work (quite a bit of bending).

Alternatively, you could remove the walking pads - I recall someone took them off and put on a rubber sole - that would work better (see below on a very nice job by @djkashuba)

REI was clearing them out this spring for $50 but I waited too long (I was going to pick up an extra pair just for clip riding) - see the thread above, they are on sale from others from time to time.

Good luck

Joe
