Headed to Colorado, what bike should I take?
I have a 63cm Univega Nuovo Sport that I ride the most. I want to be able to ride on the roads and do some light trail riding as well...should I get some tires for the Univega that would allow me to do both or should I just take my MTB and get some skinny tires with a less aggressive tread? The pros on the MTB would be that it has three chain rings and would be easier on my going up those mountains and it has disc brakes. The cons on the Univega would be its a 12 speed and I don't know how much light to moderate trail action the frame would be able to take?

It depends on where you will be in Colorado, if you will be in the Boulder/Denver Area its hilly but you can deal with a road bike
if you will be up in the Rockies, then i would recommend a MTB there is a lot of cool dirt trails there and hills, that are triple chainrings useful.
just my $0.02

Search the Denver CL for touring bikes, buy one when you get there.
I would think this is obvious.

IMHO, the only time you need a mountain bike is when you are truly off road going over routes that include lots of protruding rocks, trying to get through deep sand or mud, or when the slopes are far steeper than you would ever encounter on a paved or asphalt road. Everything else is negotiable with a regular road bike. Back in the olden days (i.e. when I was in high school), road bikes were used all the time for dirt roads and trails. Mountain bikes are only necessary for extreme situations.

Thanjs for the replies guys! Looks like I will be taking the Univega then. How bad would it be to ride the road bike on gravel with Kenda gumwalls?

Ok good deal, I was worried about how narrow of a tire I could put on there.
