Mavic MA2, any anodization?
Does anyone know if Mavic MA2 rims were clear anodized or were they just polished? If anodized, does anyone know if I can de-anodize them in a lye solution (Drano crystals/water) and rinse them with no ill effects? I have a polisher that I can shine them up with afterwards.

MA2s were anodized (at least mine are) and lye will remove the oxide layer but may attack the eyelets even though they're stainless.
Test the lye solution on a small piece of 300 series stainless to see.

There were both polished and clear anodized versions of the MA2. If the sticker says just "MA2", then they are polished. If the sticker says "MA2 Argent", then they are clear anodized.

I de-anodize with Easy Off. It's a 15-20 minute process and you rinse it off after that so I don't think there would be an issue with the eyelets. The results can be a little splotchy so you'll probably have to hit it with some Tripoli before you go straight to White Rouge. I bet they'd sparkle when you're done.
That said, I'm kind of with @ThermionicScott on doing this to a set of grey anodized MA2s. If they're red label, I'd be happy to look at a trade for something that's already shiny.

RE your original question, if it's not immediately obvious from the look or the sticker, put a dab of simichrome or wenol on a white rag and rub the aluminum for a second or two. If it immediately turns the rag black, it's not anodized. Anodized aluminum won't change the color unless you rub it for ten minutes are whatever it takes to go clear through the anodization.
I remember them usually being polished, but they did come both ways, as has been said.
