Happy Father's Day to me.....Masi Gran Criterium
Father's Day found me on my own (but not forgotten). Since I had the time on hand, I decided to finish the Italian Masi GC I purchased from a forumite probably two years or more past. Today was the payoff. We went for a ride. Not the first one as I did ride it before sending it off to Jack at Franklin Frame to take care of some issues. Specifically removal of TT internal brake cable routing, DT cable stops for bar ends, and a rough looking twin plate crown. Photo below from the seller.
Drive by L Travers, on Flickr
The frame came back to me in April last year. As usual, Jack did an outstanding job.

Late last year, I negotiated a trade with Earle Young to build some wheels for it. LF Campag hubs laces 3X to Martano rims.

Last week, I finally realized I had all I needed to complete the build, and so it began. The seat post came with the bike. All I had to do was change the color in the fluting to yellow.

Unfortunately the Masi panto chain ring was toast so I could not use it. Back when Drillium Dude was on DeeGar, I traded a Cinelli bar to him for some drillium work. I bet he got some strange looks doing the work out there. I think I knew at the time they would end up on the Masi. I guess it was a rough day at the Campagnolo factory when they made this particular crank. Note the arm at the about 2 o'clock position. Kind of sloppy work on the groove IMO. The others are not what I would call neat either. But I am not looking for perfection on this bike.

More later. Gotta fix dinner.

Beautiful and a gorgeous fork! Looking forward to seeing more.
BTW: Earle hosted a ride a few weeks back. Later on was at his place where he was offering a pretty clean PX10 yet with an eclectic build. Most generous price but larger than I could comfortably fit the frame. Other than a minor marring, poor touch-up on the top tube, it appears original and has great decals. It did have some non factory lug outlining in gold. Looked fine. That minor top tube marring could easily be corrected. Had 1st gen D-ace, likely best for trade bait. His built wheels - tubular. If he still has it and if someone is in the market - highly suggest to contact him.

Looks like all you need to do is share the final assembly image.
Interesting on the Campagnolo milling, obviously, way before CNC machining!
A friend who should have known long ago (1974) as he milled a lot of Campagnolo cranks and chainrings advised that "Campagnolo is accurate where they need to be, elsewhere, things drift"

Nah, I am going to drag this out a little bit.
Many moons ago, I bought an Italvega Superlight frame and built it up with drillium. The frame is long gone and the components have stayed with me. So of course with the drillium rings, I had to have some more. The Bullseye pulleys were installed for this build.

Bought these levers over 10 years ago. They were on my Moto CT with orange/black alternating diamonds. They were a bit botched up, so I did some filing and polishing to bring them to an acceptable appearance. BTW what looks like botched red paint is a lens artifact (for lack of a better term). I did a double take when I first saw the photo. And of course macro photography brings out every flaw.
DSCN1965 by L Travers, on Flickr
Front pretty much complete. I do have the "correct" old logo bar and stem, but I prefer to ride a wider bar. Those with sharp eyes will notice the tape is dirty. This setup was already made up from another build. I figure I am going to ride it so why waste tape. I do have some drillium brake calipers, but decided not to get carried away with the theme.

I ended up not using the wheels I had built because I messed up and sent the hub to Earle space 120 instead of 126. I will correct that and redish as needed. I had some Fiamme red which are a nice substitute, so they got the call. I also have a TTT saddle with the Masi M on it, but did not put it on as I like Brooks Pros. Weighs in at 22 lb. Could probably get it down to 21.5 lb if I switched out the Brooks.

I now have my trusty old Pro and two newer Team Pros. My artist wife tells me the new maroon(!) Team Pro from Nashbar will look great on the red Capo.

Seems a shame to mount a rear wheel and dig into the paint on the rear drop out.
Maybe you shouldn't ride this bike. Looks like art..... "poetry in motion"

What a beautiful bicycle, Lynn, it turned out absolutely fantastic. The drillium and detail painting make this one really pop.

Indeed. I made the mistake of not riding a NOS bike for three years. That was three years I missed out on some great riding. The Masi had 25 miles on it shortly after the photos were taken.

Hoo-boy, glad I dug down to page three (I've been incommunicado for over a week here)! The big pics really do the details justice. My favorite bit is the work on those brake levers. While I've seen the rhombus engravings and those triangular cutouts ahead of the cable anchoring barrels, I've never seen those line-dot-line engravings. Bella!
A bike to be proud of; super job, Lynn

Very nice.
Now you only have to make the huge effort to make it to Carlsbad California for the Masi 90th anniversary events at the end of July.
Breaking Away film on Friday
Masi Show of some sort on Sat.
Ride on Sunday morning in association with Campagnolo USA.
I will try and make the ride. I have to do a big tear down and clean up to feel the bike I will ride will be in acceptable condition, I have been going through the stable, when a bike gets its drivetrain dirty enough, I just go to another that is clean… Time is a precious commodity. I went through all the Masis and French bikes, been progressing through the Colnagos. Things are piling up!
By the way, the 3ttt saddles have a reputation as not being very comfortable.
