1983 Schwinn Voyageur SP
I saw this on the local CL, bad pics and not much of a description. I sent the seller an e-mail and figuered it would probably be gone. I got a response and it turns out, the seller and I work at the same company. Delivered to me for a benjamin.
This will get a set of north road style bars and become my sons bike. He just turned 15 and is about 5'10''. The additional upside it that we can almost ride the same size bike....
I can't remember when i picked up a bike that was this close to stock configuration. It looks to have been ridden a bit and hung up. I put new grease in the bottom bracket and headset (the hubs are sealed) lubed the chain and adjusted the brakes a bit and it was good to go.
As pictured (with racks) it weighs 26.9lbs on my digital fishing scale. Not bad when you consider it is a 36/40 wheelset, set up for coast to coast touring. I love the color, one of my all time Schwinn favorites!

Still learning
Gorgeous! Make sure your son knows he is riding a drool worthy classic. Those OEM racks are hard to come by.

Seriously nice bike! Unbelievably great price.
It's a pretty desirable older touring bike that is sought after. Probably could handle 700 rims. Definitely something to hold onto for the long haul.
Wow!

Fantastic. Definitely the deal of the month. It even has the original tires.

Nice bike, but if you tour with this bike I wouldn't use the original rack, instead buy a stainless steel rack, a stainless steel rack will stiffen up the rear end which on some of those older bikes the rear end would wiggle back and forth when loaded and descending fast.

Amazing find there, that is one clean example. If the checking wasn't present on the hoods, it would appear to have been in a time capsule. The side walls of the tires look to be in fairly good shape, also. For that price, you just stole a really nice bicycle for your son. Good on you.

Oh man, that pristine Sugino AT is the worth the cost of admission all alone!!!
Just look at the beautiful Class A stuff on there!
Sometimes it's hard to look back and really appreciate what an old bike was- but looking at that beautiful bike, and the attention that was paid to everything. Tange Champion #2. Sealed Bearing Hubs in 1983. Badass. The nifty DiaCompe quick release roller cable straddle thingys... so cool. Gran Compe brake levers. 3 water bottle mounts. I think the VSP is the first production touring bike with 3 bottle mounts stock...
Congratulations!
Two things...
If the geometry is the same as my 84 VSP- that saddle looks to have a very... distinctive curve to it- that is pretty necessary with the angle of the seat tube/TT length. I think it's a Viscount 2200 saddle... None of the other saddles I've used on that bike work as well.
Remember that Superbe Tech RD has the same dirt magnet upper pulley that made the Mountech infamous.

Thanks all! I have a honey Brooks B17 , some Shimano Canti's that would allow use of 700c wheels (set of VO hubs to Raid rims) and a set of Compass 38mm tires. I wonder if they would fit? I will have to give it a try and see.

Such a nice bike for such a young age! Make sure he rides some klunkers for comparison.
