Schwinn Crosscut frankenbike

Ignore the wheels please, they are big box donor wheels until I decide for sure which direction I am going to take with future upgrades.

So first I'd like to give a thank you to 3speedslow who went to a lot of effort to get this frame to me. I appreciate all your efforts sir.

It is a 1990 Schwinn Crosscut. Everything except the rd and saddle I had in my parts box.

From the top
Shimano EF65 3x7 brake/shift levers
Nitto handlebars on a Suntour XC quill stem
My new Brooks B17 on a Suntour XC 26.6 seatpost with Suntour XC qr
Tektro M730 v brakes
Shimano Deore deer head fd
Shimano FC-B124 175mm triple crankset with Biopace 48/38/28 chainrings
14-34 7 speed freewheel
Microshift Nashbar branded RD-M55L rd
Big box bike take off wheels
CST City tires

Future plans
Ive got a set of 45mm Velo Orange fenders coming this week, my measurements and research leads me to believe they will fit even with the v brakes, even though it doesn't rain as much here as other parts of the country the fenders will make it possible to commute to work no matter the weather. My thinking right now as far as drivetrain upgrades goes is leaning towards converting to 1x, thats why the donor wheels for now. I really like the 1x10 11-42 setup I have on my Karate Monkey, so I'm probably going to go 1x9 with a max 36 cassette as I have everything I need to convert it except a wheelset. I am now and always will be a clydesdale even at my optimum weight so I'm taking my time finding the right wheelset. Racks may be in the future but not sure yet, I've got a Revelate half frame bag on the way that I'm going to try instead of a saddlebag to carry necessaries.

I've been sick for a couple of weeks and haven't felt up to an extended ride so I haven't been able to dial everything in yet but my short ride was eyeopening as to how comfortable this bike is to ride. I was looking hard at a Surly Crosscheck or Straggler frame to build up when I spotted this on this forum. Mainly to have a lighter ride that I wouldn't be quite so nervous about leaving at work. After I got this my boss let me know that it would be alright to bring my bike in the office but I'm still glad I got it as it is about 10lb lighter than my KM.

Anyway, was sitting here bored and felt like sharing my 'new' ride.

Law is a good man and helped me out with coincidentally a Mongoose hybrid that I rode a lot of miles over 4 years on.

You are off to an excellent start on the Schwinn and it should make a great commuter.

I have the same frame built up as a "townie" with swept-back bars and front basket, otherwise pretty much stock, even kept the wheels but new rubber on those, and they are the only soft spots. If I was keeping rather than flipping I'd put better wheels on it, but too small for me!
These are pretty nice all-round frames for so many Franken-builds!

I just grabbed a 90/91 18" Crosscut. I've missed having a flat bar bike, (I had a 2005 giant cypress SX, not sure why they called it cypress it wasn't anything like the cypress group) and I haven't been impressed with any of the sit up flat bar bikes as of late, Cadent, badboy, quick, absolute, fx, Probably the bike that got the closest was Giants new Toughroad. However It wasn't zippy enough for me. Oddly enough, it was more zippy than some of the 28c flatbars I test rode! I am assuming that budget friendly aluminum bikes are just going to suck!! And I love aluminum, well my Cannondale aluminum anyways. I actually love my Dawes SST AL singlespeed freewheel also.

I could convert my Dawes sst al to flat bar and I have the flatbar and a decent stem selection on hand for that, all it would need is brake levers for flat bar. I ride it at atm 48/17 I have a 48 and 46t chainring, and I have 17 and 16t freewheels.

And now I have the Crosscut. I Like it!!! so one of the bikes was suppose to go, but... well you know. I think the n-1 is broken. So apparently the question is what to do to the Crosscut, if I do anything. What is my budget? Um I'd like to keep it low. LOL
I was thinking just delete the FR and do a 1x7. WOW the integrated triggers/brake levers just kills it for me. haha
The Right trigger is missing thumb pad.
Maybe single speed?
I like the idea of 1x though say with a 42t chainring.

Budget is no longer budget once I start adding components, wheels, powdercoat.

This thing has a specialized triple on it 46/36/?? Maybe I can find a 40/42 chainring for it and just do a delete 1x7 and see what I can do about the left hand integrated stuff. I do have 9speed deore stuff laying around. FD RD shifters. It came off my Giant talon when I did a 1x10 conversion there.

The more I ride my Crosscut the more I like it.
I do eventually want to go 1x10 but the cost of a set of wheels isn't going to be in the budget anytime soon.
The fenders fit great between the v brakes and the Revelate bag I picked up on sale fits great.

I was lucky on the Xero wheelset. I've always liked the way they looked so went browsing ebay curious. Saw a set of Xero element cxr-330's $49.99 and $15 shipping. heavy but stiff, I've rode them before on a different bike (disc brakes) and appreciated them. I dropped a bid and won $65 shipped.

bought a spacer for a $1 moved my 7 speed to new to me Xero wheels. It's a very fun bike to ride.

$75 + $65 I can live with it.

Very little use!!

I went overboard

Magura HS11 hydraulic rim brakes, Saint/ XT m786 1x10 11-36 with a wolftooth 42t mounted to a 130 bcd Ultegra crank. 700x38 Panaracer pasela PT folding mounted on 2005 era Mavic ksyrium elites (my old road bike wheel set).
Ergon SR3 saddle with Ergon GP3 grips.
The frame was sandblasted and then powder coated with Prismatic Powders called "rust bucket"
Rides like a dream!!
1x10 23 lbs 11 oz. as pictured, but weighed after chain. (I need new pictures with the chain on it.

Very nice build Metieval. I'm liking my Crosscut so much I end up riding it at least twice as much as the KM.

Here's a recent pic with the VO fenders and Revelate Tangle bag. The bag is big enough for my large u lock and tons of other stuff. Took the brooks off to try on the KM for a little while and was surprised to find that the Selle SMP is reasonably comfortable on the Crosscut as it felt like a medieval torture device on the KM.

Still 3x7 as finances haven't allowed me to upgrade yet . Definitely in need of tires soon as the cheapies on it now aren't wearing well, going with T-serv asap. Other than a minor fd chainrub issue that just appeared on the last ride I've been surprised at how well the 3x7 is working for me.

I'd guess that that FR rub is all in the cable inside the shifter itself.. Lube it up & you should be fine.

I really kinda do miss the stock color, but man this bike had been through hell with a chain. some high school kid chaining it up almost daily for 4 years.

Thank you, yeah I like this bike so much I ride it the most, My favorite will still be a road bike, but everything else took a back seat to this Crosscut. It is just flat out fun to ride and cruise around on. So I went all out on the build. I love this Schwinn bike!

Meant to ask. How do you like those Magura brakes?

Yes sir, it did. I couldn't be happier. I'll get the +1 bug occasionally but I think the only way I'll have another bike is if I can find another Crosscut or maybe Crosspoint.

The Karate Monkey is my SUV and the Crosscut is my sports car.

I absolutely love the Magura hydraulic rim brakes!

best brake I've ever ridden with! I debated for a really long time If I wanted to build a disc brake bike or a rim brake bike.

I made the correct choice with rim brakes, even if it had V brakes.... I love quiet!!! I love smooth. Neither mechanical nor hydraulic disc ever gave me that smooth quiet feeling that rim brakes give. The Maguras will stop NOW!!! I grabbed a handful of both to test them and almost launched myself!

Aluminum bikes ting, steel is quiet. Add the quiet smooth rim brakes to the Crosscut with the added bonus of hydraulic stopping power. WOW!

I rode for a little over an hour on my road bike today. 20 miles. This evening I did some cruising on the Crosscut and rode for like 2 hours. maybe 5 -6 miles? Lots of just screwing around, but so much fun!
