wow. looks like exactly the same bike. more pics would be great! interestingly enough, i got this bike just a stones throw from Davis, so they may be close brothers. if yours is a crack mine probably is too. but yeah, ride and keep an eye.

I have a Paramount that had a similar crack in the drive side rear dropout and took the frame to Paul Sadoff at Rock Lobster in Santa Cruz to have him replace the dropout and he said a better and cheaper option would be for him to grind a "V" groove along the crack and then TIG weld it, filing it smooth after welding. I was going to repaint it anyway, so wasn't worried about messing up the paint. It has held up well for seven years without any hint of the crack reappearing. Cost? $50.

This is the same procedure I was told if the frame were to be repaired. He would grind a groove then fill with something. I opted to just ride it.

I bought this in Sac as well. Also Dura-ace equipped.

Its not really dura-ace...its all over the place actually. Campy crank.dura brakes and shifters. Rx100 rd and hubs.slx brake levers. But if it all functions well enough im just going to go with it.

My master plan is just clean it up and ride it. With the semi-pro also on deck i cant afford to do much more than that. Will need some pedals though...

Crack for both bikes makes me wonder if it fits a 27.4 seatpost and people have been sticking 27.2 in there.

I don't know if it's original, but my seatpost is 27.0.

@martl, what a great BB shell. Mine are all boring by comparison. As a reference point, what post size does yours take?

The seatpost on my Trionic is a 27.2. After seeing the posted images, I looked carefully and fortunately didn't see fractures.

Interesting and maybe whimsical by the maker but mine has graphics I'm assuming name the type of tubes defining shape, such as:

Pentagla on the left chainstay, for the 5 sided polygon?
Ditchx on the top tube, for 'ditch' perhaps? Its a single recess along the length of the top tube, half width of the cable.
Horn System, on the seat tube and where in transitions round at the top to oval at the bottom bracket.

Anyone have a clue what tubing make on these frames? Weird mine doesn't note tubing make but the dropouts are modified Columbus including chromed. Chromed Columbus fork ends.

my favorite line: "with the development of this pipe, road racers have become more powerful and handsome"

(though the more common translation of the japanese would say "beautiful")

too bad a few years later someone realized... why not just drill some holes in the pipe??

I would think maybe the 'ditch' stiffens the top tube vs. drilling holes that weakens it. More costly process than punching holes. Just a hunch.

Still learning of the brand and I'm not sure of the years and model type production. Though interesting the exotic tube shaping was likely the same time as Ernesto was showing off. Its almost as Zunow's was saying, look what Japan can do, take that you Italians! The paint work and labor involved is another chapter. They certainly are something.

for those interested in the possible crack saga:

and seatpost was...

If that is a crack, then its so hairline I cannot even see it. I need to get a magnifying glass to be sure.. but certainly nothing to fret about at this point. inserted seatpost was 27.2 and was snug. (as you can see from the years of someone twisting it in and out.. and setting it way too low!!!!)

caliper reading gives 27.29 at the widest (side to side) and front to back it comes in more like 26.9.. so its sort of oval....
@so-ichiro, you might consider double checking if a 27.2 might fit.

All i know is that there are Z1s around with the rear monostay bridge. I assume these are later models, but i'm not sure.

I am impatient and went for a short ride.. after some minimal cleaning, a bit of lubricant and some adjustments... I like.

looks good from 10 feet, up close its got a lot of paint damage. I am not sure if it was ill used per say... but it is no garage queen. just as well, as I will probably commute on it

interesting that the PO really had no clue about cycles... not sure how he ended up with this bike! he knew enough to know it was worth some money - maybe the shop where he got the white bar tape done told him - or google- but no clue otherwise.

Congratulations on the acquisition, Zunow is one of the artisan frame makers you hear about, but few are ever seen. I have never had the pleasure of seeing one here, or at any cycling event I was at. Yours should clean up great from what I see in your pics, be sure and treat 3alarmer to some of his favorite distilled beverage. He definitely earned it with this beauty.
