Does anyone have one of these especially the 28"? Pics? What do these go for when found?

I wonder if that is the one I rode in 1978? Offered to me for a three mile ride home. For my first bike ride after my head injury. Also as one of the first rides anyone did after the 1978 blizzard. (Not THE first by a long shot, but three days after the storm that shut down the city. Before streets were plowed. Commonwealth Ave was 10" of hard packed snow with potholes down to the pavement.) Perfect bike for the conditions!

Did your DL-1 ever spend time in the Open Air Cyclery bike shop?

Ben

Couldn't even begin to tell you...I picked it up as a project in April, and then happened into a good deal on my '37 Tourist while looking for parts for it, so I basically just set it aside. It's too big for me anyway.

Price depends on the seller's motives and timing. This is a 1970's DL-1, brooks saddle furnished by me.

I love these bikes. In fact, I think I may stick to roadster projects from now on instead of Sports models. This project has turned into my main everyday rider. I'm always interested in project bikes. Buying a clean, ready to ride example wouldn't be as much fun for me. I like the challenge and the wrenching part. I couldn't save the Brooks saddle or fenders on this one.

here it is yesterday

ps. not that far from Boston

Cool pics and nice bikes. Eventually I will need a puttering around bike and these are an option I'm thinking about. Right now I still lean a bit more into the sporty go faster mode, but wit age there will be more nice and easy riding.

Quirky lovable slugs. If very patient can still find them under $100. Estate sales only. My keeper was $40. Most consider them just some old clunker with the standard equipped non-functional brakes...lol.

If advertised, they avg. $400. The dreamy type ask $1000. Here's a nice looker in the forums for sale section. Good luck on your find~

I found one in a barn for 40 bucks, it was in rough shape, spent about 2 months rehabbing it and sold it on ebay for 350! that was the first and only bike ive sold on Ebay.
If you have a bike coop in your area that's probably your best bet. I've had at least 3 come in while i've worked there. i actually bought one back from a customer who only wanted the hubs, the rest of the bike was rough a tree fell on it and bent the handle bars. I finally found a replacement set and now i'm looking for replacement fenders.

there are tons of good threads on these beautiful tanks. I fell in love with Raleigh after the first one i had, not really sure why. If your willing to come to Rochester NY i will sell you the one i have for 100 bucks

Here is my 70's DL-1. There is nothing that rides like a roadster (and that can be good and bad), but I like it.

I found a '74 on Craig's List for $400-drove all the way to Duxbury, MA to get it. It has the very desireable (for me) 22" frame. As soon as I get a Carradice saddle bag I will be riding it.

Maybe @dweenk or someone nearby can help you with this one. I think all DL-1s use the 28" wheel and this one looks like the large (22") frame. Good luck!

Vintage Raleigh made in England rod brake bicycle. Never got around to restoring it. Exact age unknown. No front fender. Asking $75 or best offer.

The thing to watch for with these bikes is the condition of the rims. With a Sports, there's plenty of options, but not here. Finding usable 28" 40H and 32H Westwood rims is no easy task. There are some new 36H rims available but there goes your hubs. If the DL-1 in question is from the late 60s or 70s, using a pre 65 36H AW hub would , most likely, be an improvement, but you would need to swap axles because the DL-1 uses the longer one. Wouldn't be hard to find an old steel Schwinn 36H front hub. At least you would have normal lock nuts on the cones. But as you can see, replacing roadster rims would be a big expensive deal

That bike is a 24" frame. The 22" is the smallest size they were made in, and is relatively rare. Technically, this one isn't a DL-1, but it is a 22" frame Tourist:

3 blocks from my house, for less than 7 Jackson portraits in 2015. Shown cleaned and after Brooks addition.

I like the idea of a DL-1 or at least a roadster thread. I finally came up with a correct and scruffy enough rear fender for my roadster. I reused the original front fender, but it was badly pitted. I didn't use filler, but many coats of black Rustolem, wet sanding until the surface evened out. I polished it only up to the point where it matched the gloss of the rest of the painted surfaces on the bike. Amazing how well that works. It takes a second look to notice the repaint. The repair doesn't jump out at you. I wish I could use a B-66 saddle on this, but I spend a lot of time riding this one so I need a saddle with a central relief.

Dl1 #2

Just getting into doing a second DL1. This 1977 had a non operating 3 speed hub. I oiled it, moved it around and let it leak rusty, oily goo on the floor for a while before I took it apart. I have saved it, but had a better 77 hub with a short axle which I replaced with the long axle required on the DL1. The other hub will get rebuilt in the future. The chrome parts are decent but the wheels are a little more rusty. The BB is fine, (not perfect) and the headset is surprisingly good requiring only new bearings. Front fender has little paint on the top, rear fender is pretty good. It will be another paint where required job. I have purchased a new Brooks B67 but not sure which bike it will go on yet. The bike came with no chain guard, but a Canadian 1977 likely would have had one like my 1979 DL1.

Work continues on the '77 DL1. The inside of the front rim was rusty looking mess but it cleaned up well and has been painted and new rim tape. The rear chain stay mounted brake clamps were held on by slotted screws with a square nut. Is this common? My 79 DL1 has the hex bolt similar to the front. The new cotter pins have been carefully filed and fitted and the cranks line up perfectly.

Shortly after I posted the hanging frame shown above the co-op came through with a complete bike. I did not particularly want it and certainly did not need it but for ten bucks...and it's worth every penny, believe me. It is the pretty uncommon 22" frame.

Mine was clearly crashed and straightened before I bought it, but I've ridden it for years, carrying heavy groceries, with no problems. Some years ago a very kind C&Ver brought me back some alloy 635 rims from Colombia (apparently, they're common there), but I've never gotten around to replacing the slightly pitted chrome ones I've got.
