Vintage Peugeot folding bike axle and dropout sizes

Friend was given this old Peugeot folding bike made in Italy with a 3 speed Sturmey archer in the rear. Everything seems original, but the rear axle seems way too small for the dropout. I didn't have a chance to measure it, but the dropout looks awfully wide and doesn't seemed to be stretched from damage. What's going on here?

Looks like it has been forced open wider. The sides of the slot should be parallel. I've seen it happen and generally have had success using a large set of ChannelLock pliers to close it back down to the right size. Take it easy and you should be fine.
