New silver wheels...

Any thoughts on this Mavic wheelset?

They'll be under a '91 Schwinn Crosscut, with a 105 groupset, that I'll be building for my Seattle daughter-in-law. Light-weight rider, urban/commuter use. Total weight is 2235g, but I don't have anything to compare that to.

Thanks for any thoughts!

They're heavy machine-built wheels with straight gauge spokes, but you couldn't buy the bare components for that price.

I bought some similar wheels from them earlier this year. I stress relieved and re-tensioned them before I put them on a bike and they've been solid. There will be a sticker on the box saying that tension should be checked after 4-5 hours of riding. I think this is because they aren't stress relieved in the factory, but I could be wrong.

Anyway, the CXP22 rims are heavy but solid. They're also a bit narrow by current standards. I'd consider spending an extra $30 for the A23/105 wheels from the same site. They're a bit lighter and the rims are wider.

They're a bit more than $30 over what I paid for these... and yours would have 105 hubs instead of Origin 8. I suspect that's a nice little upgrade.

Speaking to the "machine built" and "heavy" terms, which were also used to describe the ones I bought, I felt no appreciable difference between the original wheels from my Voyageur 11.8 and the new ones. They're not superlight, but they're not steel, and for commute and general purpose riding they're perfectly acceptable. Mine also showed up straight and true right from the box, so whatever machine they're using was correctly tuned when my wheels went through.

Anyway, for the price? Sure, why not? No mess, no fuss. Open the box, slam a cassette on there and go!

Note: My sample size for this opinion is exactly one wheelset. For all I know I'm the lucky guy and every other machine-built wheel is complete crap. Unlikely, but statistically possible.

+1 I'm a big fan of A23's.

+1, exactly, and agree the silver H Plus Son while slightly heavier are another strong C&V wheel with very nice polish. Do avoid the Formula hubs in my experience. I can not buy the components for their prices on any of the sets.

I've got 10,000 tough miles on my Mavic Open Pro (Miche hubs) custom built from Velomine. They do a great job there.

Those wheels are a great deal -- IF you utilize a rear cassette. For those of us that wish to stick with a freewheel-style hub, out selection is greatly diminished. I bought a set of 27x1", 36-stainless spoke, M13II rim wheels for my Univega refurb. They seem to track just fine, and for just $120 delivered, how could I argue???

No complaints with the CXP22 rims. Beautiful quality and super robust. As mentioned above, not the lightest but if you're not racing, who cares? Two sets of them for a modern multi-use rider / road and off-road. Total weight of bike at 19 lbs. makes this one swift for the trails.

One pair was set with road gearing + rubber, the other with knobbies and off-road gearing. Made the swaps in a minute. The 34c fit with ease and look right on this rim. Brand new found online from a vendor for $100 pair.

Rims: Mavic CXP22
Hubs: Giant Formula sealed Cartridge Bearing 24 hole front / 28 hole rear
Spokes: SAPIM Race, 14/15g
