Traditional 5 arm Shimano silver compact crankset?

Did Shimano have a 6500 level compact crank?...so 6550.
I have seen 6650, but i think thats the earliest ive have come across.

Just looking to use a road bike more this upcoming season and with the cassette maxed out in size, the crank is on the chopping block.

Its all 600tri components, except for ultegra 9sp STIs. Mention this because Campy isnt an option.
Might start looking at sugino doubles or something alt like that if the Ultegra well is dry.

I've never seen a 6500 series compact double. In any case, Shimano 6500 uses the Hollowtech I bottom bracket, these cranksets are sometimes avoided.

This crankset should be considered: Holdsworth Retro Crankset | Planet X

The holdsworth is a neat looking crank, but im hesitant to say a crank with holes in the rings would blend well with the rest of the bike.

Thanks though.

Wonder when ultegra first went to a compact double. Perhaps the 6650 is the earliest. Time for more googling.

The triple version fc-6503 is 110/74 bcd and you could probably turn it into a compact.

This one is a pretty good match cosmetically for a good price if you change to a standard JIS BB.

I've got the Stronglight on a 10 speed and would not recommend it. Must get around to replacing it, I find I don't ride the bike cause I don't want to deal with it.
It was awful to get setup and it will drop the chain between the chainrings. Often wonder if I got the non 10 speed version in the wrong packaging.
