3Rensho in Ohio

Found this on Letgo.com in Ohio. Seller is asking $800, but I bet it could be had for less. Last month I asked about it. She just sent me a message today asking if I was still interested. So I bet she's ready to unload, I don't know anything about it or have anything in it. Just thought I'd throw up the info.

Pics are not great, but if legit it appears to be 90's, near the time of the accident. Looks like it may have the fastback seatstays vs the Rensho stamped ss caps. And a nice size, I would get serial and contact Yellowjersey if any doubt. Someone may be able to do well if she is looking to move it.

There was another thread on this same bike recently and most of the opinions were not great a lot of little things to seem not right and in general it just looks to rough for what it's suppose to be.

3Rensho are pretty nice... and handmade. Maybe not *quite* as nice as a Kalavinka or a Nagasawa, but at that degree of finish, it's mostly down to perception & preference. 3Rensho's track frames start at about $1K; their road frames are hard to come by for less than twice that.

It has a poor paint job if factory, decals applied in a hap-hazard way and fork seems odd....if it is a real one it must have been built at 4:45 on a Friday after a 4 hour sake break....After all look what Giraldo found in Al Capone's safe?
Who knows, Pluto is not a planet and Jupiter does not revolve around the sun! So stranger things have happened....it is 2017, so it might be authentic
If someone buys it I hope for their sake it is real or they got it for a song....I believe with all the sharks out there and given the length of time it has been for sale that one of them must have given it the once over. Any hoo, good luck to the purchaser.
Happy New to All. Ben

This photos have a good amount of reflection, you can't even see if there are lugs due to the quality. The fork is turned and has a Scott decal in front. The view is from below in what appears to be a warehouse so it's probably dusty/dirty. Getting good photos would be key.

My biggest concern, if the bike checks out, would be year. I think he was paralyzed in 95'. He had apprentices and I think his son continue a little while until son started his own IIRC.

IIRC there were concerns in the other thread that it wasn't legit. Wish someone would buy it and find out....

What about the paint how's its poor? I can't get a good resolution to see close up that its bad. And which decals are haphazard looking?

Just trying to understand more thru pics.

A deal like this is how I picked up a Pinarello Record with Super Record. The price was a little more than this and had crud pics. Guy called months later and was tired of flakes, I ended up paying $500 and it is very clean, the guy babied it. Unfortunately, or fortunately for my wife it was her size. But the value was a good buy.

The Aero shifters look right and cable routes over top of bb. If behind the rear break cable is fastback bolt that would be right. They are offset on the newer. Not like Cinelli, straight through. The fork does look a little thick but may be angle. Can't believe no one has better pics.

This is what it kinda of looks like. I don't know how legit that price is for a newer one. 1996 3Rensho 59 cm Road Frameset Blue Sparkle | eBay

Hi good questions;
If take a look at the paint 1/4 up from the bb...on my screen looks like orange peel the front fork decals are not well placed etc.etc.
if you take a look at the previous discussion on this same bike a lot of these issue were discussed along with pics of other 3r's
if you do a quick google search and take a look at the bikes pictured there i believe you will see a difference.
I am in no way an expert on these, but the bike looks unprofessionally done to my aging eyes....if it is real and clean 3R maybe the pics are just bad....someone take a chance and look at it then buy it even if it is a repaint...those do not grow on trees and the condition is a good point for negotiation.
I mentioned that it has been up for awhile and if it was the real deal I really would have thought that someone out there would have checked it out.....maybe they did and passed if they didn't why not many of us drive hours just to pic up the part we need to finish a build.....no one near her is an enthusiast willing to give a 3r a look?
I hope it is real and someone on the forum snags it for a great price.
Not an expert, JM2C's Ben

^I agree. Any truly super bargain doesnt last long with all the flippers and collectors out there. Seems incredibly unlikely to me someone wouldn't have snapped it up if it was a smoking deal.

I'm not a 3Rensho/Yoshi Konno expert but I'm thoroughly obsessed, have done a ton of research and own many 3Rensho and several other Yoshi Konno built frames (Specialized Allez's).

Based on the awful pictures available, I'm fairly sure it's an authentic 3Rensho frame, it's a repaint, it's been modified and the fork is probably not original.

https://us.letgo.com/en/i/3rensho-scott_37b5c2e5-0651-4183-aeb8-2452befaf267

Details that point to it being a 3Rensho include the fastback seat stay arrangement as well as the aero shape to the stays, and shifter placement.

Definitely a repaint, not an original color, it's been modified with internal brake cable routing, decal placement is way off. Fork crown shape is off and there appears to possibly be a line running around the top of the fork blade which to me points to a possible aluminum fork, which is definitely not original. Scott made aluminum forks right?

Here's a 3Rensho I owned a while back for reference, lots of good detail shots.

https://flic.kr/s/aHsjB3qzsy

With a mix of what appears to be Shimano 105 and Dura Ace, the bad repaint and modification to the frame, and possible non-original fork, I'd be hard pressed to pay anything more than $300-350. If the fork turns out to be original, I'd fork over $600 tops.

Actually, there's one very similar to it selling on ebay right now, for just under $2K.

And fwiw, I've seen 3Renshos with internally ducted rear brake lines; it's likely original to the frame for two very simple reasons:

1) It's an expensive b!#$h of an aftermarket modification, since you'd have to dismantle the seat-lug cluster & wholly remove the TT to do it; and...

2) 3Rensho builds one-off custom frames; if it's non-standard, it's more likely to have been a specific request by whoever commissioned the frame.

So. It's better to regret something you have done than something you haven't done, or, as Hemmingway put it, "The shortest answer is just to do the thing."

Really-- what have you got to loose by checking it out in person? "Who dares, wins!"
