Surface treatment on Shimano 600 components?
Good Evening all;
Trying to return one to service, currently equipped with mid-80's Shimano 600 components (6207 series).
Do these parts have any sort of clear or silver anodizing, or are they just aluminum? Concerned about taking Blue Magic to them, only to inadvertently "burn through" a factory finish...
Thanks in advance,
Dave

Clear anodized.
Rules of thumb:
If the part is black, it's anodized and dyed. Same with red, purple, blue, etc. - anodized and dyed.
If it's grey, it's hard anodized. That's just a thicker layer of anodization
If it's dull silver, it's anodized
If it's super shiny, it's polished aluminum, which will get dull over time as it oxidizes.

According to my New 600EX (6207) literature, the brake calipers, brake levers, headset and crankset are anodized. The derailleurs, hubs and pedals are spec'd as "buff finish", which I take to mean polished aluminum. The finish of the shift levers is not spec'd but later literature for the indexed (6208) version mentions buff finish.
Whenever I'm unsure, I take some aluminum polish and try it lightly on an inconspicuous area, such as the back of a crankarm spider, back of the inside parallelogram arm, etc.
