87 Cannondale ST400, Few Questions...

87 Cannondale ST400, Few Questions...
So I picked up what I think is an 87 ST400 a few months back for 80 bucks. Honestly, I got it as a project bike so I could get a bit better with the repair, and probably make a commuter/ gravel style bike out of it.
That said, I'm not entirely sold that it's an 87, because the serial number seems a bit off to me when I try to look it up on the Vintage Cannondale site.
So I guess my first question is...the serial number is 23062587017. Can anyone decipher it for me?
Second, and this may anger the purists, but I wanna go STI with it, I'm curious if anyone has a suggestion for a 7 speed cassette?

I can't help with the serial number or the year.
Are you running a freewheel hub or a a cassette freehub rear wheel?
If a freewheel, any Shimano, Sunrace, or IRD seven speed should do the job perfectly. STI shifters should be a fun addition.

Serial indicates it's a 23" frame, the 17th one made on June 25, 1987. So likely an 87 model, although a little late in the model run. I believe they would have come stock with Maillard hubs using a freewheel, but at this point who knows what's been installed. Any Shimano or Microshift 7 speed STI will shift any Shimano 7 speed freewheel or cassette- spacing is the same.
Great frames, BTW. Easily upgraded to 10 speed and 700c wheels using Tektro 539 or 559 brakes. I'm looking at my 88 right now, which has Deore FD/RD, compact Sugino crank, Ultegra/Open Pro wheelset, 10 speeds with down tube shifters, etc. Gets ridden a couple thousand miles per year.

I'm sort of debating the idea of a 1 by drivetrain, maybe with an oval ring up front. Sounds weird, but I have a similar setup on my mtb, and I love it.
As I said, probably sounds weird, but I'm an odd guy. I may even go all out and throw an oval chainring on it. I'll probably start a build thread on it soon.
Any idea where I can get a spec sheet, etc, so I can look up part sizes and so on?

As close as you can get to a spec sheet will be the 1987 Cannondale catalog on the vintage cannondale website. it will have the basic components that came on the bike, but if stuff has been changed out over the years it might not be to helpful. alot of things you will need to figure out or post questions on the forum. there is a strong following of Cannondale guys on the forum here.

wpd821, A 1X7 using a 34T chain ring and an 11-28T cassette would provide a GI range from the lower 30s to the mid 80s, tailor to your needs. For a 1X I would use non STI brake levers and reuse the DT shifter or a single bar end shifter. Older STs make for a great starting point for upgrades and changes, have fun with it.

I'm still back and forth on the 1x. Really not sure, it's just an idea I'm kicking around. I'm debating a move to Oregon later this year, (depending on the availability of teaching jobs in my subject, level, etc) and plan to use it most as a commuter/ gravel style bike.
I plan on starting a build thread once I get into it in the next week or two. I'm fighting a pretty nasty cold right now, or I'd be covered in grease and smiles, if you follow me. I have managed to get it stripped down to the frame and cranks (need to get a crank tool).
I'm not going to go super expensive with it either. I don't want to drop more than a few hundred bucks in it, but the worklist right now looks like new drivetrain, (probably shimano claris parts, or there abouts price point wise). 700 c wheels, new bars, threadless stem adapter, racks.
First step is paint, which I'll probably do rattlecan. I intend on stripping it all down with airplane stripper, then probably hitting it with either Black and Kawasaki Green (if I can find it or a color similar for cheap) or Duplicolors Orange Metallic, which is a Nissan color I believe.

My 86 came with 105 Uniglide freehubs, 7 speed. I run a 14-28 cassette (now Hyperglide, BTW), with a 48/45 half-step setup.
