Is it just me? Seems to me there is a missed opportunity to be had by coming up with something even semi elegant for plugging the derailleur hanger on a converted SS/FG. Maybe a low profile buttonhead allen or such? I think it would look much cleaner and finished. Alas I don't own any, not in my wheelhouse.

One could use caulking or silicone seal. Both are reversible. Andy

Could even glue in some thing with one of those, maybe a screw or bolthead, absolutely don't want to mess up the hole. I was thinking something specific that threads in properly and looks good, would have to be the correct thread of course.

I'm thinking a big, sharp, Ben Hur hub spoke would be pretty cool.

Machine a lockring with gear teeth, matching gear with shaft to spin in the hangar bolt, then the BenHur twirling blades of doom. A bike polo terrorist.

The conversion trend has tapered way off. Not that much call for this anymore.

... Fortunately dying a well-deserved slow death.

The most constructive use I have seen for an unused derailleur tab is to mount a rear-facing tail light or reflector on an L-bracket. This works best, of course, where traffic moves on the left side of the road, but it is arguably also useful in right-side countries. When commuting, I have often had reflectors on both sides.

I use automotive trim plugs to fill all the unoccupied frame holes on all my bike. Brake bridges, fender and rack mounts, etc. Looks sanitary because you can buy the exact right size. Plastic so they "Snap" into place. Might even help to keep water out.

Green and red flashing LED. It's a nice tight fit in a 9mm threaded hole. The battery screws onto the back and acts as the switch.

I used to attach them to sport kites for night flying.

Looks neat. Link or source please? Do they have other colors?

I was going to post a link to the online kite shop where I got them, but I discovered that it no longer exists. Yes, they came in different colors. I forgot to mention that they are magnetic. I'm sure they weren't made just for kites, so you may be able to find them elsewhere.

Hey, at least he's not hacking the hanger off completely.

With a little effort, you could probably fabricate a tail light mount to go there.

I have seen similar flashing LED lights used in numerous "premium give-aways" like advertising pins and chot-skies (SP?) and have salvaged the lights and tossed the adverts. Only thing I can guess is that some site like Alibaba that sells direct from the Chinese sweatshops to YOU might have dozens of vendors who make and sell them for mere pennies (tho may require a large unit purchase).

Google "m10X1 plug". All kinds of them, usually around $2.

I had a passing thought a while back to find a way to afix a smiley face to the RD mount on one of my conversions, just never got around to attempting to implement it.

Thanks. I could do that. I wonder how many I could sell?

I was thinking maybe the butt end of a spent shell casing from a 9 or 10 mm cartridge.

Sign me up for one.

I have my '73 Raleigh Competition set up as the fixed gear machine, and it provides a black background that would open up all sorts of possibilities. It has an ochre Brooks Professional and cotton bar tape shellacked to a nearly identical shade.

wow, perfect! No idea such things were made and in Stainless no less!
And thanks to AlexCyclistRoch for the correct spelling of tchotchkes...I knew I was stabbing in the dark but wouldn't ever have chanced on THAT based on the phonetics!
