The article has it right: "ludicrously expensive."

Just wow. But if you've got millions to spend on a car, what's $60K for a bike?

Of course, you could buy six of the Pinarello Dogma bikes that won the 2016 Tour De France for the same price, and then fly to France and ride them on the road, but when was this ever about practicality?

Luxury French car brand Bugatti and German bicycle design house PG have joined forces to create what they call “the perfect blend of the best of two worlds” with a carbon “special bike.”

To the best of my knowledge, the marque has been a luxury brand of VW, a German entity, for nearly 20 years.

So that's why the dealer was asking me if I rode a bicycle the other day when I had my Veyron in for service......

Bugatti has had a long history of producing cars in France and, although they are owned by Volkswagen AG today, they build the Veyron in the city in which they started, Molsheim, France (although it was in Germany when Bugatti was founded in the 19th century!).

Some things are just made to be expensive, prestigious and one of a kind. I don't doubt the cost if it's all developed and engineered from scratch using only the most expensive materials. I'm sure there are equally as nice bikes with a zero or two less on the price tag ;- )

I never run into that issue. My bikes are all well ridden, and look it. Only someone who knows bikes has any idea what they're worth, and they never ask about what I paid

Bugatti did design a bicycle. (designed a supercharged velocipede motor too)
Either Much more unique that that.
Art Stump made two very close examples of the frame design.

When they don't sell I envision the higher end version of when VW gave you a Trek with a Jetta.

As far as the design goes, PG’s unique frame uses an asymmetrical rear triangle to support the weight of the rider and the forces generated by pedaling without any surplus tubing.
It's too bad the bicycle industry spent over 100 years accounting for fairy tail nonsense like "triangulation." But:
The tubing is shaped with aerodynamics in mind
Perhaps it's an aero choice?

Of course, no bicycle experiences lower aerodynamic drag than one that isn't being ridden, because:
Despite drawing inspiration from a road-legal supercar, PG states the bike “is not intended to be used on public roads.”
Ah, just like the "not intended for off-road use" stickers on Walmart mountain bikes.

With things like this, you pay for the privilege of paying a lot of money...

It's kind of funny to me that the American urban messenger bike aesthetic (if you can call it that) is seen as hip and stylish by Europeans.

Bugatti designed an airplane, the Bugatti 100, in the thirties. The prototype was never finished because of the war, but a replica was built in 2011-2013. It crashed, killing the pilot, in 2015.
