Spidel/Mafac LS2 levers are hard enough to find and expensive in good condition. Hoods for them are pretty much already unobtanium. May as well lok for Mafac levers with barrel adjusters on them. Most likely had an Atax stem with black and silver Peugeot stick on logos on the sides of the extension. A Cinelli 1A stem will also look nice on the bike. Aero style stems or aero anything will not look right on this bike.
Another interesting tidbit, my LBS has a wall hanger 80`s Competition with the exact same Shimano 600 FD on it as is on my Super Competition. We were comparing the bikes today and the LBS owner pointed it out. I wonder if they did a substitution to the 600 on some imports? Seems strange?

Hey Steve, could you please get a pic of the rear hub sticker? I have a Maillard 700 front hub (and that is outrageously smooth), but the rear was originally a Helicomatic- I replaced it with a Maillard 600 sealed bearing hub- not quite as nice as the front hub, but much more confidence inspiring than the Helicomatic.

The catalog says that it came with Mafac Course, drilled levers. I see some on eBay at various prices and condition. If I can find a longer Atax Peugeot panto stem than the one I have on the bike, I would be happy. I will probably end up going with a Cinelli set of some sort though and just put my original bar and stem combo in a box for safe keeping.

Nice bike. If it were my bike I'd swap the stem to the size that fits. Yeah you'd lose the panto, but the better fit would supercede that to me.

Gorgeous Pug! That graphic scheme is my favorite on the PX's. Now I'm itching to get to work on this frame, which I believe is an '81 PXN-10E. I got it sans fork, so what's shown installed is a replacement that I scrounged. It's a bit tall for me, but at least the top tube length should fit. (catalog page courtesy of bikeboompeugeot.com)

I love the blue as well. My LBS has a Competition in black hanging on the wall. That looks cool too. Your frame says Super Competition so I do not think it is the same as that one in the catalog? Your decal should say all tubes are 531? It is the same as mine.

You may be correct... the catalog page I attached was the closest I could find when researching it. These Peugeots are quite a conundrum to decipher! Serial number on mine is B102XXXX.

Not quite as close as yours, but at least I don't (can't) try to worry about making mine all original. How did you like the ride on your shakedown cruise?

Seems like a nice ride so far other than the fit issues. I will be pulling the Gatorskins off as they feel sluggish to me. I will probably end up with some good racing tires like I am used to or eventually run tubular on a second set of wheels for perfection. Handling is great. The brakes are typical early 80`s side pull, meaning they are not that good in the hoods. If I was not so close to original, I would modern out this frame. It seems worthy.

I had to upgrade mine as well, going to change the seatpost, saddle, stem, front derailleur and crankset. I wonder what steel they used in the rear triangle.

Thanks for this thread, as it made me remember I not only have one of those, but it is also my only racing bike with generator lighting, which makes it perfect for a warm evening like we are having tonight.
Just took it out for a late evening spin. Phone camera not really coping:

Yay for the Super Competitions! I finally got mine out for a spin today after accidentally figuring out how to adjust the tension on the Simplex rear derailleur. I couldn't find much info out there on that. I was ready to take it all apart and see if I could figure it all, which I did as I was loosening the bolt to remove it. So many posts with so many bad things to say about these old Simplex RDs and I started putting in bids on newer Shimano 105 RDs. I had looked at the Vintage Suntour V-GTs, since older posts had recommended those as a good period-correct replacement (upgrade!). But those are actually very expensive on Ebay these days. But no need to replace just yet. I will take it apart on a rainy day soon to overhaul it.
For now, it's shifts great on the new Shimano Mf-Tz20 6-speed 14-28t Freewheel I put on a Weinmann Lp18 Wheel Set, which I installed to get the bike up and running until I can figure how to get the helicomatic lockring off the old one (hoping some PB Blaster will work it's magic) so I can replace a cracked hub. Surprisingly, I actually miss the smaller 13t gear on the Maillard freewheel. With as out-of-shape as I am now, I didn't think it would even matter, much less be noticeable. But a couple of times on a wind-sheltered flat area, I found myself reaching for more gear!

Well this is awkward. I just ordered some orange Jagwire cable housing myself the other day, thinking I was being very clever. Looks great on your bike. Hope it looks as good on mine!

I just put Gatorskins on my new wheels since my brother swears by them. He commutes on his nice (modern) bike and hates having to stop to change tires. I don't ever plan on racing, so I can appreciate the sturdiness without having to worry about going really fast. But I'd still be interested to know some examples of "good racing tires" you like. These PXN10's seem built for speed (even if this rider isn't).

when you have tailwind or go downhill you use 52x13 quite a lot. most of the time i shift to 52x13 when i'm going past 42km/h or so. Keep in mind that you can remove each cog individually on helicomatic freewheels, which means that when they are worn you just flip them around.
