Cracked Superbe FD

While cleaning up components for the new bike I noticed this:



Clearly we're moving toward one fewer Suntour FD in the world. But is it an immediate concern or just something to keep in the back of my mind till I come across a suitable replacement?

If it matters, I spend the vast majority of my time on the big ring, so the arm will be under constant tension but not being shifted all that often.

Any crack discovered on the repair stand is a gift. Don't provoke the implementation of Murphy's Law....

Come to think of it, I do have a Cyclone MkII sitting around that was unsuitable for my Voyageur. Will be a solid substitute for now.


...Anyone with personal experience on catastrophic FD failure? Curious what that looks like.

No but the FD DA uses a plastic insert on the limit screws, much like a unlock nut. mine failed and after I climbing a steep hill, the chain magically shifted from the big ring to the small ring and I couldn't pedal. Used lock tight to fix the screws.

There is a clamp on one on the Bay missing the clamp. You might send the seller an email and see if you can get the price lowered.

I've seen the Cyclone II models with the same crack. T'were me, I'd just ride it for awhile. You could also swallow your pride and replace it with a Cyclone model for less money and the same function. 1st generation always preferable to to the 2nd, IMHO.

Yeah, I'd just keep riding it too unless it was on a climbing bike. If I'm not climbing then I don't normally come off the big ring unless there's a monster wind or something like that.

@J.Oxley I've got a braze-on version that's missing some of the bolts and bits, but the body appears to be crack free. Let me know if you'd like it and I'll drop it in the mail for ya.
