Finally snagged a Bottecchia
some may recognize @curbtender 's professional that he saved from the ravages of outside storage! So far I have only gone up hill on it (rode it up to Lone Mountain in SF) and it nearly killed me since I am so weak from compact cranks and large cogs-
but lively enough- I like it!

Really nice bike. This is where you can get the slight overgearing "practice" going up the hills. Can you compare the ride with some others? If so, then how would you rate it?

curbtender cleaned it all up for a rider and its ready to go barring minor adjustments. Need to put some cages on the pedals, raise the seat just a tad - probably swap the seatpost. if I wanted to continue polishing and finishing I could.. still considering
its made of:
and is currently my only italian bike. Ill have to ride a bit more before I can compare anything. it did not feel heavy going uphill at all- just made me work for it. also made me faster as I had to go faster just to go at all!
edit: it was purchased in 1972 as far as the original owner recalled- so its probably a 71/72 model.

several missing parts. cranks are Nervar Star which look ok but I assume are not original - brakes are universal- etc. I have some pedals for it

The Professional and the Giro d'Italia both used the same frame in 1972. The Pro had Campagnolo Nuovo Record derailleurs and Record Crankset and hubs. The Giro had the chromed Record rear derailleur, Tipo hubs and Nervar Star Cranks.

Hey, nice lookin' bike... Original owner bought it in 72' and he said he rode the heck out of it down in Monterey. His family has always been in the auto repair business and he said he had done some machining on the bike. Bike came with older Time pedals and I just didn't have spare Campy's to put on. Some parts came from a donor, but the frame was well preserved. Happy that it went to a Forum member.

I have a record crankset in my pile - its from the 80s but it looks pretty much the same as the 70s - might be doing that. we will see.

Oh my is she a beauty! And tall! Just my kind of bike. Seeing a Bottecchia in this color scheme always reminds me of the one I almost was able to buy in Portland, but it sold midweek (locally) before I could drive down from Seattle.

I concur. It's a Giro d'Italia, which was 2nd from the top of the line. In addition to items already mentioned, the stem and post are also the correct, downgraded versions used on the Giro d'Italia.

Nice looking Botty, regardless of which model it is. Not the first time this has come up here, with these two models of Bottecchia. I lusted for either one badly when I got my '72 Special (entry level that I lover dearly regardless,) I would stop and have to drool into a napkin in order to not stain the bikes or the dealer's carpeting. And, that blue with white panels is the paint scheme that drew me to the Bottecchia line. Congrats on inheriting it from @curbtender.

its probably just a mash up- it clearly says "professional model" on the top tube, and it sure looks original paint -
I wonder if it might be an earlier model before they decided to split the two models and its sort of both...
or the more likely: they had a pile of parts, and they had a frame.. and they stuck em together and sent it out the door. then later someone made the catalogue page explaining the differences and the shop was like: too late now...

It's a beautiful bike. Hope you enjoy it as much as I've enjoyed mine. I've had mine since new in 1972.

Your new Bottecchia is beautiful.
Bottecchias hold a special place in my heart. I have owned my Bottecchia Professional, with Columbus SLX tubing, since new (1989).
Here is mine before I converted to a modern, Athena 11 speed set-up.

Back in the day I used to fit into this jersey.

Love it! It's the earlier, pro-level version of the Aelle Bottecchia you found that I bought. Very nice. The early Columbus decals are pretty.

Very nice! I'm a sucker for a blue frame with chrome. Looks to be well-preserved for its age. A real beauty. Got any close-up pics of that stem? Out of curiosity what type of headset? Also, what size post? I may have a proper seat post for you.
What's up with that extreme shifter angle?

hi gaucho- ill get you some details on friday! woudl be interested in that post for sure. I think I will swap in the record crankset since its just sitting about anyway. start making it a bit closer to what it says on the top tube.
its in decent shape, but as it was left outside, the beauty you see is all curbtenders work- close up its got some decent patina for sure.

It is a good looking bike, but a bit heavy. I am a sucker for chrome lugs which is why I bought mine. Besides the top tube ID, the headset is a give away too. The Pro had Campagnolo, which the Giro did not. The PO of mine striped the panel decals off mine which I have to get now. I took most of the parts from my crashed 72 Le Champion and put them on the Giro to turn it into a Pro. Left the head set.

Really nice looking project @SJX426, the white panels will make this one, IMHO. I used that paint and panel configuration when I repainted my '74 Raleigh International, back in the early 80s. Looking' good!!!

hah! well i have the same headset so maybe its a giro that someone painted "professional model" on the top tube! or someone in the shop grabbed from the wrong frame pile -
I like Bottecchia's story as a person which is actually why I wanted one. that and the chrome
what are the brakes on yours @SJX426? it seems we are both doing a little upgrade to our Giro's..

Have often wondered if the Carnielli marked stem was not a contract item from Italmanubri (ITM). The oval recess in the side of the extension is most likely a plug in the tool which can be easily changed so that the maker can offer the stem with any marking requested, or leave it blank.
jetboy - you mentioned on your test ride the gearing was too tall. This chainset accepts inners down to 38T whereas with a NR/SR chainset you would be limited to a 41T inner.
