Will a narrow Sedis/Sachs chain work with 1st gen Chorus Syncro?
I'm getting ready to complete a 1st gen Chorus Syncro install and tuneup on my Montello this coming weekend, and the only chain I have on hand that I would like to use is a narrow Sedis/Sachs chain from the later 80's. I did some research, and the table circulating out the showing chain com0atibility with 1st gen Chorus RDs and a Regina America 6 speed FWs only mentions Sedisport chains are compatible with the comb9, for syncro shifting. So I'm wondering if I should even try out my narrow Sedis/Sachs chain, or start looking for a Sedisport chain on the bike?
Can someone who might have tried the narrow Sedis/Sachs chain/Syncro shifter combo please advise
The Sedis Sachs narrow chain packaging does mention that it is for indexed systems.
BTW, the RD I am using is also 1st gen Chorus.

I think it would be worth a try. I have only used new 8 speed chains (KMC and SRAM) on my Syncro II builds. I am up to 4 bikes now with Syncro and they all shift pretty well. I'm convinced that a modern narrow chain helps override some of the "finicky-ness" of Syncro.
The KMC Z72 is available from a few places, usually around $10-12 shipped. Good chain and comes with a master link.

Yes, I heard that Campagnolo got Syncro II to work quite well, but I'll be using the Syncro I (the one eithr shifters that came with my 1st gen Chorus gruppo and the tables only called out for Sedisport and Regina CX chains to use when using a Regina 6 speed cogset . I guess I'll just prepare myself for some possible frustration when I try out my narrow Sedis/Sachs chain out on it this weekend.....

There's always the friction option ... Good luck!

First installed the regular width Sedis chain (which was also recommended on the published tables as the chain to use with a Regina FW.) the bike came with when I bought it......and it shifter like crap!. Just would not index properly no matter what I did with the cable tension and adjustable RD cable stop. Then, I noticed that the chain was a bit too short and the jockey wheel cage was pulled to the front a bit too much on the smallest rear cog/big ring position. Did not have a matching chain to take links from so I took the plunge and installed the Sedis /Sach narrow chain I had in my stash on the bike. Figure I had nothing to lose trying it out anyway, and I really have to finish my Pinarello build already. The chain was not listed on the tables I've seen posted for Syncro shifter combos, so I was expecting even crappier shifting from the chain..........
But Holy cow! It works! Only had to adjust the cable tension once so far because of cable stretching and seating. Took the bike around the block to test, and it shifted great!
So, at least, the narrow Sedis/Sach chain definitely works for this combination:
1) 1st gen Chorus RD with the A/B position options set to A.
2) 1st gen Syncro Shifters with the 2nd lever on the RD shifter to go from indexed to friction.
3) Regina America Superleggera 6 speed freewheel with 13/21 cogs with the typical groves on the tips of the cog teeth.
4) Sedis/Sachs narrow chain ("For indexed systems" noted on the box.....Duhhh!!...).
5) Campagnolo stainless steel spring RD shift cable casing (without the plastic cover on the exterior).
I suspect that any deviation from this list would screw up the system and shifting would go to hell.
I was really surprised it worked because I always thought the narrow chains only worked best for freewheels with narrow spacing (7 speeds and up).
Only reason I an think of why the narrow Sedis/Sachs chain was not mentioned on the tables was that the tables were written before they produced the narrow chain.
Thanks everyone for the input, specially Zukhan, who in the end convinced me to try the narrow chain anyway!
One more Syncro system figured out in BF!
