Miyata Upgrade

I have a Miyata 310 that I purchased in 1981 when living in Chicago. The bike has been stored for around 15 years and is in great condition It's all original apart from the tyres - yes even the cables are original (need to upgrade for safety sake).
I would like to replace the rear gear cluster to give me a wider range and possibly another gear but at the same time keep the original Suntour gears which work fine.
Any thoughts on whether I could do this and what components would work?
FYI, I'm living in the UK now but visit the US regularly so I could pick up bits there

Thanks David

How many gears do you have now? Is it 12 speed?

In order to answer your question, we will need to know the current gearing and the model number of the rear derailleur, which should be stamped on the back of the parallelogram. Typically, a 310 of this era came with 14-28T freewheel and a 42/52T crankset. Depending on the derailleur this might be at the limit.

Don't know which bits you are attached to but...I upgraded my 710 to a shimano 105 9 speed 12-27rear and an 80s durace double 52/38 in front. I got the 710 as a frameset so I put on a triple 105 rear der/old shimano light action front der as well. I'm running the old friction dt aero shifters. Works great. I love the ride. Upgrade!!!...
