Help with Peugeot PX8 restoration
Hi!
I found a cheap black Peugeot PX8. I'm pretty sure it is a PX8 because it has the original sticker on. Decals seem to indicate 1982 or 1983. It has all the original parts, simplex derailleurs (front has a broken clip), mavec brakes, chrome fenders and a light at the front and a rear luggage carrier.
I'm planning to restore it as a touring bike.
-The front fork is bent and I have to change it. (frame is straight) I'd like to find a Peugeot/french fork so I could use the original stem and handlebar. But would it be wiser to change to a more common fork and then get new (/vintage) headset, stem and handlebar? Someone had installed the headset lockring wrong and damaged it so I have to change it anyway.
-It has a square tapered BB but the cranks have a uncommon thread and my crank puller wont work. I have to get the cranks off with some other trick so I can do some maintenance on the BB. I'd like to keep the original BB if it is in a good shape but if it has a BSA thread should I change that too?
I'm sure one could easily reply to my questions do what you want, but this is my first bike restoration and I'm not sure is it better to maintain the original parts as much as possible
Aaaaand... Now I've started to think should I just scrub the bike clean and nice (maybe strip fenders etc, make it a road bike), flip it and try to find a nice steel framed Trek or similar and make it into a touring bike. It wouldn't have any issues with strange threads etc. haha

Be very careful with the crank puller! You don't list what make/ model the crankset is.
FIrst, I'm assuming you pulled the crank bolts before trying the tool. Seems simple but many people have rushed and forgot that step!
If your tool is loose in the cranks it is probably a standard threaded one such the Park one and you need a specific tool for those cranks (stronglight and TA often take their own proprietary tools).

Thanks for the reply! And warnings. I'm trying to be really careful not to mess anything up. I took the bolts off, but the crank puller won't thread to the cranks so I assume the cranks have a different thread than a conventional puller.

Post where you are located. Someone local might have one. Possible - doubtful, but faintly possible a co-op may have one.

Crank puller
If it’s a PX8 with original BB, it’s in all likelihood got Stronglight cranks, French thread! Search for same, should not be hard to find on eBay.

I'm now looking for new wheels so I can cold set the rear few millimetres more apart. Then do some paint touch ups, clear coat and then assemble the bike
