all in all it cost less than 1 new chris king headset. the steering is very quick... true racing/crit qualities that schwinn intended

I have no idea what a Chris King headset costs, but I like your way of thinking. In those terms, my road bike was half the price of my MTB seatpost

Some very nice components on that Schwinn!

the bike was originally all suntour superbe, save the gran compe brakes, which are original. The frame is SL with an SP downtube and SL forks. I don't remember what the seat was, but the original tires were Vittoria CX tubulars. Oh, and I think that someone (sensibly) changed the bars and stem for something useful - the original was an extremely narrow crit bend aerodynamic monstrosity. Second to the Paramount in the Schwinn line. A killer deal for a King headset. Columbus stickers can be had on ebay for about six sno cones.

The '85 catalog lists the saddle as an Avocet Racing II, white leather. I think the bars are original as the catalog lists them as Cinelli Model 64(Giro d' Italia), the width increased as frame size increased. Stem is listed as Cinelli 1A. Extension length again increased with increasing frame size. Derailleurs and shifters are listed as Sun Tour New Superbe Pro.

stem is about 80mm in length? correction on the calipers: diacompe royal grand compe 400 ...
levers: royal (or new) grand compe

i deduced the year from the headtube serial #5c00630... though i could be wrong (wasnt able to find schwinn serial convention for 1980+ bikes)
headbadge # is 0113

Interesting. The headbadge number indicates January 11, 1983, but the model doesn't show up until the 1984 catalog, and your bike seems to have at least some components that match the '85 model.

0125 makes more sense. That indicates Jan. 12, 1985. As you surmised, the Dura-Ace components were added later, replacing SunTour New Superbe Pro.

yah. The superbe parts are way classier. But dura ace has a small following as well. I don't remember what the bars were that came on mine, but I replaced 'em with Cinelli 64's. They were wierd criterium bend with about a 12 inch drop and maybe 38 cm wide. I didn't know better and rode 'em til I couldn't stand it...they were similar to the bars that came on the '85 trek 560.

Maybe they only spec'ed 'em on bikes that came to Idaho. We wouldn't know better up here...
